Hello all,

Garden club is returning!

Back by popular demand from students and parents, the environmental team are delighted to announce the return of this valued lunchtime program.

Who:  All students and staff are welcome! Primarily guided by Ms. Courtney, with the possibility of special guests 😊

What: Digging, planting, watering, weeding, building bee hotels as well as creating signage.

When: Tuesday lunchtime, from 2pm, down by the garden beds (bottom of the basketball courts)

Why:  To expose students to basic gardening skills, to encourage a responsible and caring connection with nature, provide a hands-on approach to learning about seasonal food production, offering a lunchtime activity that bridges all year levels, whilst leaving room for leadership roles to be naturally cultivated within the school setting… aaaaand it’s fun!

We have 5 garden beds and with everyone’s gentle hands and tender care, we will be on our way to be producing the following.

🌱 Garden bed 1: Strawberries, lettuce, mizuno and the herb called thyme

🌱 Garden bed 2: Fennel, lettuce, silver beet, mizuno and rainbow chard

🌱 Garden bed 3: Baby carrots, coloured carrots, rosemary and calendula flowers

🌱 Garden bed 4: (soon to host)  Purple beetroot, golden beetroot, rainbow chard and parsley

🌱 Garden bed 5: Broccoli, silver beet and lettuce

Key information to share with students:

There are two watering containers for students to water the garden with.

They are 'working' watering containers, please do not take them away for other adventures, they have an important job to do!

We can help the school by returning them back to their rightful homes ✨

These watering containers can be found by the shed roller door and filled up from the drinking tap next to the Prep playground.

*Please gently water the brown straw mulch only - the challenge is to try not let water touch any green leaves/foliage, as this can hurt our plants 🌱

Appropriate signage will be developed alongside participating students in the coming weeks, as will a survey which will be sent out to parents who wish to be involved in supporting this program – e.g., from watering over weekends holidays – working bees.

Shout outs to these two students who have demonstrated leadership in the initial development of this program - 3/4B students, Jack and Jett R.

Other students who have shown a keen level of engagement:

Prep B: Isaac L

3/4A: Michaela H & Oliver S

3/4B: Carter & Rylan

3/4C: Dante & Alex

Let's see what we can grow, together!

Warmly,

Your school environmental team,

Courtney and Kim
