Sustainability

Naranga is continuing recycling practices every day. The challenge to students and staff are to recycle three different items in the classroom and at home. Naranga recycles blister packs, food scraps, paper, printer cartridges, coffee pods, tea bags, batteries, and bread tags. Unfortunately, the Lids for Kids program has come to an end and we are no longer collecting plastic lids. Let us all start recycling for a healthier world.

NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK

Our Pathways Sustainability students learned how to repurpose plastic containers.

If you have any transparent plastic milk, yoghurt, or drink bottles, you can repurpose them in the garden to protect young seedlings from insects, or to add extra nutrients near seedlings. You can also cut out a section of a milk container to turn it into a handy scoop.

Garden nurseries sell packets of plastic spikes with small holes to screw onto the tops of plastic bottles. Attach and then turn them upside down and spike into the ground next to plants you want to water. You can mix a little liquid fertilizer with water to add nutrients to the soil. This is very handy to set up if you know you will be going away, as it acts a slow drip system.

Recycling and repurposing materials is easy, and your plants and seasonal vegetables will thrive.

POLLINATOR PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

The winners of this competition will be announced in tomorrow night’s free webinar at 7:30 pm organised by the Wheen Bee Foundation. The judges will announce their three favourite pollinator photos and the stories behind the photos. Good luck to all our Pathways Sustainability students who took part in this competition and entered bee or butterfly photos.
