Hoping everyone had an enjoyable long weekend. With the King's Birthday holiday on Monday it has been a short, but busy week. Some families may have got an extra long weekend with our Curriculum Day landing last Friday, whilst others made use of a fun filled day at OSHC that was open for the day and had 35 participants!
As part of our school's community of practice, teachers and the principal team attended a day of professional learning on Friday around the Science of Learning at Viewbank Primary School. This was a joint endeavour organised by the principal teams at Ivanhoe PS, Rosanna PS, Viewbank PS and Watsonia North PS.
Teachers from all four schools were provided with a grounding in cognitive science in order for us to better understand how students learn and in turn how our pedagogy can be tailored to meet the needs of our learners. It was beneficial to discuss and share with staff from our community of practice schools and we thank Viewbank PS for hosting us. Mark and Pam led the afternoon session that was just for IPS teachers, where we worked on evaluating and improving our school pedagogical model consistent with our deepened knowledge of the science of learning. This will be followed up on Thursday where Mr Kent, Mrs Wright, Ms Temple and Mr O'Callaghan are attending a course on Leading Instructional Learning at the Victorian Academy of Leadership and Learning. We are all lifelong learners at Ivanhoe Primary School!
The year 2 students had an incredible day last week at Bundoora Park! It was wonderful to see so many students embracing the spirit of the occasion and dressing up. The diverse activities were both educational and engaging, perfectly complementing our integrated studies unit, Change Over Time. Students had a wonderful time having an immersive experience into life and school in the past. A special thank you to all our amazing parent helpers who we noted got into the spirit and dressed up along with the students!

Your Principal team is seeking your help and understanding to address the issue of students racing to be first in line. While we applaud your child's enthusiasm to attend school, this is an accident waiting to happen. In addition, this early morning failure of not being in the number 1 spot in line is leaving some students significantly not ready for learning.
The school gates are opened in the morning at 8.45am as this is when our duty of care begins, and the school day commences. Unless engaged in a sanctioned educational program or an appointment with a teacher, children and parents are respectfully requested not to be on the school grounds before 8.45am.
This includes entry through the school front door and the OSHC gate.
Footy cards have become very popular once again in the playground.
Unsurprisingly there have been a lot of problems with trading and cards going missing which has been interrupting learning time and causing distress.
Trading is not allowed under any circumstances and please remind your children to keep their very special cards at home. We do want children to enjoy pursuing their interests, but if trading does not stop we will be forced to implement a school-wide ban on Footy cards.
At Ivanhoe PS we are committed to equity, excellence and care. We promote a school culture that values diversity and fosters respectful relationships. From time-to-time issues arise in class or at play that we endeavour to approach in a sensitive and caring manner.
This means we demonstrate respect to our peers, our teachers and our parent community. It is important to remember that children do not have to be friends, but they are expected to be polite. Often students have a strong sense of social justice. While they do not always recognise their role in relational conflict (primarily because they are young) they invariably understand logical consequences and expect them to be applied fairly.
As teachers we actively model and teach appropriate behaviours, using evidence informed, strengths-based approaches, to support students to succeed and be happy at school. We expect students to be active participants in their own learning and behaviour choices.
When playground or friendship issues arise, teachers and staff use a positive behaviour approach to try to affect the best outcome for all students. These processes are proven to be beneficial for students in helping them to develop problem solving strategies and resilience. There is no acceptable excuse for being unkind, teasing or undertaking any bullying behaviour.
We seek your cooperation, and request that you regularly speak with your child about our school values and what they mean and look like. IPS is a great school with a great vibe not by accident but by design. Culture is important and when we work together we get great outcomes.

Today we have over 30 pre-school children booked in for our final playdate with Foundation students. This is an excellent way for children who will be joining our school in 2026 to get to know the school, teachers and other children. The playdates allow pre-school children to feel comfortable and exicted about starting school and we look forward to welcoming them next year. If your child attends one of our local kinders/childcare centres, then there may be other opportunities to visit and play, with excursions planned by childcare centres and kinders for next term. Check in with your child's kinder to see what they have planned.
We also welcome families to book a school tour led by one our principal team. In the meantime, if you intend for your child to attend IPS in 2026, please get enrolment forms in as soon as possible to allow us to plan classes and staffing for 2026.
Thank you for your continued support.
