Year 5
Spotlight on Learning
Bethany Community
Dear Families,
This week we were proud to see our Year 5 students participate reverently in our Parish Mass. During the liturgy, we heard the Gospel reading from Luke 11:29–32, which calls us to reflect deeply and turn our hearts back to God. As we continue our Lenten journey, students are learning about prayer, repentance, and responding to God’s call with faith and action. We thank our Year 5 students for the respectful way they represented our school community.

Our learning this week:
Religious Education:
This week in Religious Education, Year 5 students have been learning about how showing compassion reflects the teachings of Jesus, especially during Lent. They explored how Project Compassion supports people in need and how this connects to the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Students also reflected on how their own acts of compassion can make a positive difference in the lives of others.
English
This week in English, students focused on strengthening their reading and writing skills. They practised reading accurately, smoothly, and with expression, while building their understanding and use of vocabulary from our class novel. Students also developed their note-taking skills and used their notes to clearly share and justify their point of view about a topic.
Mathematics
This week in Mathematics, Year 5 students have been learning to find unknown numbers in multiplication and division equations. They practised using inverse operations to solve problems and explain how they worked out the missing value.
Integrated Studies
This week in Integrated Studies, Year 5 students explored how people change places over time and the impact these changes can have. They identified and discussed examples of both positive and negative changes, considering how human actions can shape environments and communities.
Social Emotional Learning:
This week in Social and Emotional Learning, Year 5 students reviewed vocabulary used to describe a range of positive and negative emotions. They discussed how different events and situations can trigger different feelings and explored the idea that we can experience more than one emotion at the same time. Students practised identifying emotion words and suggesting situations that might lead to positive, negative, or mixed emotions, building their understanding of how complex our feelings can be.
Auslan
This week in Auslan, students learned how to use their fingers to represent other things, such as legs, a person moving, or two people standing near each other. They practised using their hands clearly and purposefully to show meaning in their signing.
