Head of Primary Years' Report

Dear parents, carers and our community of Hazel Glen College,

It sure has been a busy term and each week we have had year levels having experiences outside of the classrooom. This week, I attended the Year 3 camp with the students and staff and this was a great experience for all. I was proud of our students as they enjoyed learning about animals and the environment in their visit to the aquarium and the zoo. We had lovely weather and the camp accomodation was perfect for the Year 3s to enjoy their first camp.  I would like to thank the staff that take time away from their own families and commitments to attend our camps. Without their willingness, our camping program would not go ahead. We have staff from across the Primary Years who volunteer to support the year levels who attend camp as well as members of our leadership team. This is symbolic of the positive culture we have at Hazel Glen College.

I was also fortunate to attend the Year 6 excursion to the Production matinee last Friday and what a show! Our College really does put on a fantastic production each year. This year it was Beauty and the Beast. It is always wonderful to see our past Primary Years students take on roles and be part of this experience.

We are proud of our approaches to support student wellbeing in the Primary Years. In 2022, the Department of Education released the model for improving student outcomes placing learning and wellbeing at the centre. Since then, many schools have endeavoured to ensure that learning and wellbeing are an equal part of our practice in every classroom, every day.

Our teachers and support staff focus on student participation, connection and engagement to their learning. Learning encompasses both academics and social/emotional (wellbeing). We continue to review our organisational structures and processes to ensure that our practices are best practice and that students are building capabilities to positively engage and reach their full potential.

What successful wellbeing looks like in the Primary Years;

  • safe and secure
  • connected and belonging
  • voice and agency
  • positive learning behaviours
  • inclusive and respectful
  • early and targeted support

We continue to monitor overall student wellbeing through data and observations, and our recent student survey results provide strong evidence of success in our approaches to embedding wellbeing strategies within our everyday practice.

At any time, if you have wellbeing concerns about your child, please raise these with their classroom teacher in the first instance. Student wellbeing is a shared responsibility at Hazel Glen College, and working together with families, classroom teachers and our leadership team ensures concerns are communicated appropriately and that the right support and planning can be put in place for your child. Please note that whilst we do not offer on-site counselling, we work with families to direct them to appropriate external support services to engage where needed.
