Academic Culture

Ms Carol Roberts - Deputy Principal Academic Culture

I am continually in awe of the community we have here at St Patrick’s College, and the way we support one another through both moments of challenge and moments of celebration.

As a school, our commitment to learning is paramount. However, learning should never be seen as something that is restricted to the classroom. There is opportunity in all that we do to learn, to grow, and to better understand ourselves, one another, and the world around us.

What we seek to do each day is support our students holistically: academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. This means walking alongside them in their successes, but also in the more difficult moments that inevitably form part of their growth.

Importantly, learning is always a partnership between school and families. In this context, I would like to sincerely thank our community for your ongoing partnership, trust and support of all that we do. It is through this shared commitment that we are able to continue nurturing young people who are confident, compassionate and ready to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

This week, our Year 10 students have been undertaking Work Experience, a significant opportunity for them to step beyond the classroom and begin thinking more deeply about their future pathways.

This year, we have made some changes to the way we approach the program, including making Work Experience compulsory for all Year 10 students and timing it ahead of our Subject Selection process, which begins in Term 3.

We have also been intentional in asking boys to make these arrangements themselves, recognising the independence and confidence that come from taking responsibility for this process. Importantly, this also reflects our trust in our boys to step forward, make contact, communicate appropriately and begin to navigate the world beyond school.

We have had students engaged in a myriad of diverse opportunities — everything from physiotherapy to football clubs, from farms to trades, law and urban planning, along with performing arts, advertising and air traffic control, just to name a few. We are absolutely thrilled with the way our boys have engaged throughout the week.

These changes reflect our belief that every student should have the opportunity to experience the workplace, explore areas of interest, and gain a clearer sense of the possibilities that may lie ahead. Work Experience is not simply about trying a job for a week; it is a formative opportunity for students to learn more about themselves, their strengths, their interests, and the decisions they will soon begin making about their future.

We are grateful for the way our families have supported this approach and encouraged their sons through the process. I would particularly like to congratulate our Year 10 students for the wonderful way they have engaged in this important opportunity.

Semester 1 Reports

Today, all students will receive their Semester 1 report. This provides an important opportunity for students and families to reflect on learning and progress across the first half of the year. Reports provide essential information to families about their son’s progress and growth, focusing both on work habits and learning outcomes.

One year on from the introduction of overall subject grades and changes to work habit reporting, we have been pleased with the clarity this has provided for students and families. The inclusion of an overall letter grade alongside individual assessment task percentages in particular gives families a clearer summary of student achievement across the semester.

Importantly, grades continue to be determined in relation to overall cohort performance, rather than fixed percentage bands. This allows for a fairer reflection of learning across different assessment tasks, subjects and levels of difficulty. Year 7–10 PE, VET and VCE-VM studies continue to be reported in line with their specific requirements.

Our reports form an important part of our commitment to meaningful, student-centred feedback and to working in partnership with families to celebrate growth, guide improvement and support every student to thrive. If you have any questions about your son’s report, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team.

2027 Subject Selection

In Term 3, our 2027 Subject Selection process will begin. As a school, helping students navigate their learning pathways is a key part of how we support their growth and development. Subject selection is a significant and exciting milestone—one that encourages students to reflect on their interests, strengths, and aspirations as they prepare for the next stage of their education.

We are currently finalising our Subject Information Booklets, which will be shared in digital format in Week 2 of Term 3. These resources are designed to provide both students and families with clear and detailed information about the subject offerings for 2027.

We warmly invite all parents of boys who will be in Years 9–12 in 2027 to attend our Subject Information Evening on Thursday 30 July (Week 3, Term 3). This important event will offer valuable insights from key staff about the subject selection process. You’ll also have the opportunity to speak with Heads of Faculty, who will be available to answer questions and provide specialised advice across each learning area.

In the meantime, our message to students is clear: ask questions, visit university and TAFE open days, attend careers expos, and take the time to reflect on what energises and inspires you. These are important decisions—but they are also opportunities for growth, exploration, and self-discovery.

We look forward to supporting our students and families throughout this process and helping each learner take the next steps toward a future of possibility.
