Innovation, problem-solving and creativity were on full display this semester as our Unit 1/2 Systems Engineering students completed their programmable logic-controlled robots.

Inspired by bomb disposal robots used in high-risk environments, the students designed and built autonomous machines capable of navigating their surroundings independently. Much like a robotic vacuum cleaner, the robots rely on bump sensors to detect obstacles and change direction without human intervention.

A key part of the project challenged students to develop and write their own programs, determining exactly how their robots would respond when the sensors were activated. This allowed each student to create unique behaviours and refine their understanding of coding, electronics and automated systems.

Some of the more advanced students took their designs even further, incorporating servo motors that enabled an attached arm to oscillate. These moving attachments gave the robots the appearance of specialised tools, such as object-manipulation devices or other mechanical extensions commonly seen on real-world engineering robots.

The project provided a hands-on opportunity for students to apply classroom theory to a practical engineering challenge, while developing valuable skills in design, programming and critical thinking. The completed robots are a testament to the ingenuity and technical ability of our aspiring engineers.

Congratulations to Year 12 student Lucas Byrne on his selection in the Australian Crocs squad for the upcoming FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup in Türkiye.

Lucas will represent Australia against the world’s best young basketballers, with the Crocs opening their campaign against Serbia on Saturday. This is a tremendous achievement and recognition of Lucas’ talent, dedication and hard work.

We wish Lucas and the Australian team every success throughout the tournament. Families and supporters can follow the action via the livestream link below.

The Shamrock

The latest edition of The Shamrock is on its way to your letterboxes and is also available to read online via the College website. This edition is packed with stories celebrating the life of the College, both in and out of the classroom, including our selection for a NASA-supported space science program, our National Sorry Day observance, the memorable Darwin Football Trip, the continued success of the Shamrock Café and our ACC Athletics victory.

We also catch up with many Old Collegians including Australian rower Tom Foley and Geoff Jones CSC OAM, and announce four new OCA 'Legends' who will be formally inducted at a gala event in August.

Be sure to keep an eye out for your copy or visit the website to read the magazine online.

Annual Giving Appeal
