Acting Principal's report

Dr Michael Carroll, Acting Principal

Dear Members of the SPC Community,

Welcome to the final day of Term 2 and my final day as part of the SPC Community.

I do want to begin by acknowledging the powerful sign of support offered last week at Cody Breen’s funeral.  The very visible presence of students, staff and families highlighted the strength of our community and the support that was offered to the Breen family.  May Cody Rest in Peace.

This week has seen plenty happening at the College including the Year 7 Retreats, the Year 9 Melbourne Experience and the Year 10 Work Experience as well as a host of sporting matches.  My thanks to the many people who have made this week possible.

The Semester 1 Reports will be released today.  These reports provide an opportunity for you as parents to monitor your son’s performance and importantly develop plans for how he can continue to improve.  I encourage parents to discuss the reports with your son, look at what went well and what needs to improve.  These discussions, along with the Parent Teacher meetings scheduled early next term, will allow you to develop a plan to make Semester 2 even better.  My thanks to the staff for the work they did in preparing these reports.

Well done to all of our students who have represented the College in ACC and BAS competitions this term. It has been a very successful season with many teams, including our BAS Badminton, 1st XIII Football and 2nd XVIII Football, reaching finals.

Big congratulations to our 1st XI soccer team, who capped off an undefeated season in the ACC Division 2 competition with a thrilling grand final win against St Mary's College at the Home of the Matilda's last Friday. Special mention to Ollie Behrens, who scored a hat-trick and was named best player on the day.

Tonight I depart Ballarat and head home to Brisbane.  I thank the SPC community and wider Ballarat community on the way you have welcomed me over the last 11 weeks.  I have enjoyed my time and wish all within the SPC Community the very best for the remainder of 2026 and beyond.

SPC is a wonderful school with a proud history.  Each of us have a role in ensuring it continues to be a proud Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition.  Thank you for welcoming me. Mr Steven O’Connor will return to SPC as College Principal next term, and I wish Steven all the best in Semester 2.

Enjoy the holiday break and the opportunity to recharge in preparation for Semester 2.

Thank you and God Bless.

Michael Carroll
