Primary School

Primary School is a hive of excitement now with all the fun and offerings that is Term Four at Great Southern Grammar. We are busy preparing for the Interhouse Athletics Carnival, House Leader Voting, Year Six Graduation, Term Four Football Cup, beginning new Horizons activities and farewelling our Years Twelves. There is something exciting on offer for everyone.

Horizons

Term Four Horizons is spread across the week this term with many activities on offer including:

  • Wild Space Walk (Mrs Craig and Mrs Clifford)
  • Cultures of the World (Ms Laneaux-Neale)
  • Craft Club (Mrs Youens)
  • Before school Tennis (Mr Nelson Stanborough)
  • Swim Squad (Mr B and  Ms Nicole Robertson)

Thank you Mr Berryman for organising these dynamic activities and to the staff who have given up their time to organise and run them.

House Leader Nominations

Our Year Fives have been actively campaigning to become House Leaders for 2024. They have been asked to write an email addressing the selection criteria and why they want to nominate, assist with school events and briefings and write a speech which they will deliver in Week Five before voting in Week Six. A very strong, capable group of nominees have put their names forward, guaranteeing our Houses are in safe hands next year.

Term Four Cup

Mr Hardey has once again revitalised AFL in the Primary School with the Term Four Cup. An exhilarating inaugural competition comprising four teams with students participating from Years Two to Four. There is no trade period but plenty of family ties with sibling rules applying to the make-up of all teams. This week saw The Dragons (19) take on the Eagles (14) and The Kraken (20) take on the Vipers (7).

Curriculum Spotlight - Daily Review

At Great Southern Grammar we acknowledge the importance and value of direct, explicit instruction. With so much research into the science of learning and knowing learning itself is in fact a change in long-term memory, we can apply the findings of the ‘forgetting curve’ and Allard’s (2007) findings that students need 24 repetitions to take a new skill into their permanent memory. Here we call this ‘Daily Review.’ Whether it is a warm-up, a PowerPoint or quick revision we know that these short, repeated practices are a game changer in learning from Kindergarten, all the way through.

School Values and ECC Stars of the Week

With a very busy term it has been quite a timely spotlight on the school value of 'Commitment' this past fortnight. Our students are showing commitment to a vast range of activities. Well done to the following students who received recognition for this value:

Louie Sutton, Sebastian Pyle, Maria Grosshans, Mackenzie Maynard, Malachy Williams, Ellah Turrill, Fraser Lester, Bo Anning and Lars Collins.

Well done to this Week’s ECC Stars of the Week; Eleanor-Grace Danso, Ava Smart, George Grosshans and Gwen Elliott.
