Stop the Summer Slide: Keep Reading

Sandringham College Library

The Summer Reading Slide is a real thing.  As the summer holidays begin and the warmer weather is upon us, for many it's the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy some great reads.  And I have had quite a few students borrow big for their break.  But there are students who will not look at a book during the break, and these are the students that will become part of the Summer Reading Slide.  Research shows that students who stop reading over the 6-8 week summer break can lose an average of 2-3 months of reading proficiency.  Meaning students are losing important reading skills they have built up over the past academic year.

Don't let the Summer Reading Slide affect your child's reading progress.  Try these helpful strategies...

  • Have a screen free 30 minutes to an hour of reading every day.  Involve the whole family.  Train yourself to put down your digital device and other focuses for 30 minutes a day, to immerse yourself in reading for pleasure.
  • Visit and join the local library.
  • Enter the Big Summer Read at your local library -
  • Bayside Library
  • Kingston Library
  • Register Books in the Big Summer Read at Sandringham College Library (Prizes awarded in 2024).
  • Encourage your child to borrow a few books for their summer reading.
  • If your child doesn't have a book and they're bored suggest an eBook or audiobook from Sandringham College Library 24/7 via the website.
  • Give books as gifts.

Every Christmas I talk about the amazing Icelandic Christmas tradition, which I think the whole world should adopt.   What a relaxing way to spend the night before the chaos of Christmas Day.

Struggling to think of a book to buy, here are some suggestions from students...

The library has been a busy place during Term 4.

International Bookmark exchange

Students at Bluff Road were excited to participate in the International Bookmark Exchange, which is facilitated by the International Association of School Libraries.  This unique initiative encourages students to create bookmarks and exchange them with students from another part of the world.  As a participant we are matched by the number of students registered and their age.  With over 2000 schools taking part from all around the world, this is a great opportunity for our students to learn about different cultures and share their own.  The designs our students created were amazing and the students at the school in Hungary, will love them!

Music Performance in the Library

Students in the Bluff Road Library were treated to a before school performance by the Strings ensemble.  It was a wonderful way to start the day.

Students performed:

  • Eleanor Rigby
  • Wellerman
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
  • Zoosters Breakout

Thank you to the students and their String teachers-

Jeremy de Korte (Upper Strings) and Keryn Lientschnig (Lower Strings)

Thank you!

We would like to express our gratitude to the parents of Sandringham College for your contribution to the Library Fund.  Your financial support goes towards resources for our students. Contributions to this fund help pay for subscriptions to World Book Online, eBooks and audiobooks, the Library Website, Reference Generator and other resources that provide support to our students' academic pursuits.  Your generosity has also enabled us to purchase beautiful new furniture like the First Nations chairs and bookcases that add to the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere of our library.

This year the fund has supported us to purchase a new Circulation Desk for the Holloway Road Campus Library.  It arrived this week and we LOVE IT!!!
