Week 9: Footscray West students solve problems calmly

At our school, we solve problems so everyone can feel safe, respected, and included. Sometimes problems can make us feel upset or angry, and that’s okay. When our emotions feel big, it can be hard to think clearly or make good choices. That’s why the first step in solving a problem is taking time to calm our bodies and minds so we are ready to talk and listen.

Once we feel calmer, we can start to work through the problem together. We can explain how we feel using calm and respectful words, like “I felt upset when…” This helps others understand our perspective without blaming or hurting feelings. It’s also important to listen carefully when someone else is speaking, even if we don’t fully agree. When we take turns, keep an open mind, and remember that one mistake doesn’t define a person, we help keep our relationships strong.

After we understand the problem, we can think of solutions together. We might take turns, share, choose a different activity, or find a fair way to decide. Sometimes the first idea doesn’t work, and that’s okay – we can try again. This week, think about how you solve problems: Can you calm yourself first? Can you use kind words and listen carefully? Working through problems helps us build resilience and makes our school a better place for everyone.
