Last Friday, TOBA celebrated outgoing President, Dion Smith (’87) to acknowledge six years of dedication, commitment and service to the Association.

Dion’s family, friends and TOBA Executive Committee members gathered in the downstairs cellar at Steve’s where incoming President, Terry Jones (’70) welcomed the group and made special mention to Dion’s wife, Janey and children Molly, Harry (’21), Ted (’23) and Bill (’25). Also, his Mum, Judy and Stepdad Brendan Molony (’65) (all in attendance).

Dion has had continuous involvement with the TOBA Committee since leaving in Year 12 in 1987, commencing as a Committee Member in 1989, having a gap year along the way before progressing to VP and then President.

Richie Mackiewicz (’87) then took the floor outlining Dion’s achievements since taking on the Presidency in 2020 and roasting him as only Richie can. A few more stories were shared from attendees and Dion’s son, Harry gave a tribute to his Dad.

Special mention to Rob Gatti (’87) who flew in from Sydney to join the celebration. A few apologies were received including Stephen Spiers (’85) currently in Chicago, Bruce Davis (’86) in Columbia, Steven Yovich (’75) interstate, Patrick Coward (’81) in Vietnam and Mike Anghie (’87) in the US.

We thank Dion for his commitment and steady leadership.

A great night shared by all.

Upcoming Events

Tuesday, 24 March

4.30pm to 5.30pm Presenting the Oars

War Cry

Support our rowers in the 2026 Head of the River.

Celebrate the 30-year anniversary with George Xouris and members of the 96 crew. The 10-year anniversary of the 2016 win also.

Old Boys needed for presenting an oar to each rower and singing the “Rumble" in a way that the rower knows when he is hurting in the race, we are all with him.

The Prefects have asked if I could think of an event where some Old Boys could be filmed singing the War Crys with Passion. So, I am inviting you to come in and join the rowers in singing “Oh hail to Thee” and “Rumble” and get it on film for the Prefects to show the students and visually capture the TC Spirit. It is an elusive beast.

We will put some drinks and food on. If you let me know you are coming no charge. If anyone organises their year and gets 8 blokes along, they will get a shirt - The Vikings designed by Liam Dee (07).

As a student in the 85 I can still remember the army of Old Boys turning up at the Aths. They had been at the Hyde Park Hotel Aths Breakfast and filled the back turn of Perry Lakes it let me know this was my school and we were going to win the Aths together, we did. It was very powerful. Old boys are welcome to have a drink, and some food watch the 5-minute highlights video and the rev up from Old Boy Olympians.

The boys have a mass from 4.00pm until 4.45pm then will leave at 5.30pm with their oar presented by you and a mindset that we will do this.

Come and say thanks to George and our 96 and16 crews.
