Wellbeing

The Berry Street Education Model

At our school, we use the Berry Street Education Model to support students' learning, wellbeing, and emotional development. The model is based on five key areas that help children feel safe, connected, and ready to learn:

  • Body: Teaching students strategies to regulate their emotions and feel calm.
  • Relationship: Building positive, trusting relationships with staff and peers.
  • Stamina: Developing resilience, persistence, and confidence when learning is challenging.
  • Engagement: Encouraging students to participate actively and enjoy learning.
  • Character: Fostering empathy, responsibility, resilience, and a positive sense of self.

By embedding these strategies into everyday classroom practice, we aim to create a safe, supportive environment where every student can thrive both socially and academically.

We have implemented the following strategies as part of The Berry St Education Model:

*Welcome Circles

*Ready to Learn Scales

*Ready to Learn Strategies/ Ready to Learn Plan

*Brain Breaks

Welcome Circles

They are a brief morning routine (around 5–7 minutes) where students and teachers gather together to greet one another, check in, celebrate successes, and review the day's expectations each morning. This consistent routine helps every child feel welcomed, included, and emotionally prepared for learning. It also gives teachers an opportunity to notice how students are feeling and provide support before challenges arise
