A PLASTIC PROBLEM TURNED INTO A SOLUTION

in a village called Njau in Gambia, plastic bags were a cheap option to carry shopping, but it created an environmental problem for Njau. Africa animals were eating plastic bags dumped on the roadside and dying. The story One Plastic Bag by Miranda Paul, shows how one woman’s determination to clean up her local environment led to a recycling movement. Isatou Ceesay encouraged the local women, to collect used plastic bags, wash them, cut them up into even strips and crochet a new product out of the plastic material. They crocheted purses to sell at the local market. Money from the sales helped to buy a goat for a family. Over time the environment was free from plastic waste and the families in the village had a healthier and cleaner environment.
