Year 3/4 News: What's Been Happening?
English: Crafting Exciting Stories
Our Year 3/4 students have been busy writing their own narratives. They've focused on using interesting vocabulary, adding a variety of connectives and openers, and including different types of punctuation. Students have learned to follow the structure of a narrative, with particular focus on building tension towards the complication. They've also added a coda at the end to share the lesson learned from the story.
Maths: Exploring Place Value
In Maths, we've been diving into Place Value and understanding the value of numbers. Our activities have included playing games to reinforce learning, rearranging digits to make the biggest and smallest numbers, representing numbers in different ways (using materials, pictures, words, and numbers), and learning to partition numbers by their value. These skills will be very helpful when we start adding and subtracting larger numbers.
Religion: The Law of Love and Helping Others
Our Religion lessons have focused on the Law of Love and the 10 Commandments. Students worked in groups to research how Church-based organisations help others, including Caritas Australia, St Vincent de Paul, and Catholic Mission. The class enjoyed learning about practical ways to show love and help others. We are now beginning a unit about Lent and started the unit by having some delicious pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.
Health and Sport: Keeping Active
We've been learning about the importance of physical activity for our bodies and minds. Our lessons have covered recommendations for movement and activity, ways to be more active for better health, and cross country practice and pacing for longer distances. Miss Cattelini even challenged us to run for 10 minutes without stopping!
Art: The Walcha Show
In Art, we've been creating an artwork for the Walcha Show based on the American contemporary artist Dean Russo. We've learned about and used various techniques, including tracing, watercolour painting, and stencilling. Students have had a great time creating vibrant abstract portraits of animals in Dean Russo's style. We can’t wait for you to see our final artworks this weekend at the show!
History: Discovering Dhungutti Language
In History, we've been on an exciting journey learning about the local Dhungutti language and land. Our class has been very creative, making our own Dhungutti language resources to share what we've learned. We've made colourful posters with Dhungutti words and their meanings, fun card games to help us remember new vocabulary, and interesting slides to present our discoveries.
