Library News

The Year 8 English classes have received their Choose Your Own Texts to start reading now and over the holidays. There was a great choice of books for the students to select from and we hope they enjoy the stories and the task in Term 4.

During Wellbeing and Child Safety Week the Louise Humann Library continued to be a place for students to enjoy the welcoming and inclusive space. On RUOK? Day, the library promoted and encouraged deeper conversations, actions and seeking support, via a display and vision on the circulation desk LED screen. We all should be asking RUOK? every day, not just for one day.

There are still some library loans outstanding from earlier in the year. We ask that parents please check at home for library books and remind students to visit the library to return books. The library is open every morning from 8.00am every school day to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 4.00pm Fridays, so students can race in and return books through the day.

With the Year 12 Trial Exams fast approaching the library staff are busy binding notes for the students to use as a reference in SACs and then the exams. Since the start of the year the library has bound close to 150 notes for VCE students along with adding additional notes for students from their classes to complete their bound reference.

We encourage the Year 12 students to effectively use the library VCE study space to prepare for exams and wish them all the best with the Trial Exams over the school holidays.

Study Skills Handbook - Preparing for Exams

Do you have exams this semester? Follow these steps to help you achieve your personal academic best:

  1. Find out what you need to learn: ask your teacher if you will be tested on the whole year’s work or just the second half of the year. You may like to work through the PREPARING FOR EXAM BLOCKS unit to help you put together a study plan.

  2. Make your study notes: work through the SUMMARISING unit to learn how to make brain-friendly study notes. On the THINGS TO PRINT page you will find a very useful Study Notes Checklist. You want to get your study notes finished as quickly as possible.

  3. Learn your study notes: make sure you remember what you study by using the techniques in the ACTIVE STUDYING unit. Studying isn’t just about reading—it’s about remembering. If you are interested in exploring learning preferences, you can find more in this unit on this topic.

  4. Practise the skills of the subject:  do as many different questions, revision sheets, chapter reviews, sample essays or past examination papers as you can. There are suggestions on how to make sure the practise you do is effective in the ACTIVE STUDYING unit.

  5. Review your test-taking techniques:  this ensures you make the most of the time in the exam. Don’t let nerves trip you up! You can learn more about what to do the night before, the morning of the exam, how to approach multiple choice questions and essays in exams and much more in the TEST-TAKING unit.

And remember, don’t leave your study until the last minute – get yourself organised well in advance.

Bonus Tip: When you get your exam paper back make the most of it by using the strategies in the AFTER TESTS AND EXAMS unit.

Please encourage your young people to keep reading over the holidays, whether it’s books, magazines, newspapers, closed captions on the TV or social posts, just keep them reading and critically thinking about the information they read!

Thank you and have a wonderful break.

From the Library Team 😊
