Chev Need to Knows

15 November 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

Today at the College we celebrated ‘G’ Day, and I was privileged to be able to extend a warm welcome to a large gathering of our Year 7 students’ grandparents and grandfriends.

‘G’ Day is an occasion where we pause to celebrate and honour the grandparents, grandfriends and ‘greatpeople’ who are making an extraordinary difference in the lives of our Year 7 students. Today, we reflected on the deep and lasting impact they have on the young people who gathered together today.

There is an old saying that holds a timeless truth: “It takes a village to raise a child.” Grandparents and grandfriends, our 'G' people, embody this saying in the most profound way. They are the village. They are the ones who, through their love, wisdom, and unwavering support, support the students’ parents primarily, and their teachers, to nurture and shape these young lives. Their presence, their stories, and their quiet acts of kindness build a foundation of resilience and compassion in these children that no school lesson or textbook could ever replicate.

Year 7 is a pivotal time - a bridge between childhood and the teen years, full of exploration, excitement and new challenges. It is during this phase that the guidance and encouragement of ‘G’ people is most needed and most cherished. ‘G’ people provide a safe harbour from which these young people can set sail into the unknown, knowing that their steady support will always be there when they need it.

The role they play as grandparents, grandfriends, and great mentors goes far beyond simple support; they enrich their lives with stories of the past, lessons in perseverance, and examples of unconditional love. They teach them the values of humility, kindness and respect, not through grand gestures, but through the everyday moments - sharing a laugh, lending an ear, offering words of wisdom.

As they continue to guide and inspire, we hope they remember that every smile, every word of encouragement, every shared memory is a seed planted in these young hearts. Their influence stretches beyond what we see today; it reaches into the future, shaping their decisions, their character, and their outlook on life.

So today, we celebrate ‘G’ people. They truly are the village it takes to raise these children, and their contributions are more meaningful than words can capture. On behalf of the College, I extend our heartfelt gratitude for the love and wisdom they give so freely. They make our community richer, our students stronger, and our College a true extended family.

I thank all the ‘G’ people who celebrated with us today, for reminding us all of the power of community and connection. May they be appreciated and recognised for the indelible impact they have on the lives of these young ones.

Blessings to you all, and may we continue this journey together with love, purpose, and shared joy.
