Visual Art Teachers: Susie Belcher & Jess Russell-Davies

Welcome back to ART for 2024!! It's so exciting to see everyone again and a BIG welcome to the new Prep students and their families to Footscray West Primary.

Firstly, just letting you know that Jess Russell-Davies, our Performing Arts teacher will be joining the Visual Arts team! She is such a creative artist and we are so lucky to have her. Jess is an outstanding jewellery designer, so I’m looking forward to learning about this craft!!

DONATIONS

NEWSPAPERS PLEASE!!!!!! Our supply is very low at the moment. I have my 80 year old mum collecting her papers… lucky she loves doing crosswords!!! If someone else could collect too I’m sure she would be grateful!

Also, those little fruit cup and yogurt containers would be awesome too. Thank you!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE ART ROOM THIS TERM

Just while we have been waiting for the art supplies to arrive we had a MASSIVE donation of wool from Liz’s Aunty (BIG THANK YOU!) which we used to start making Ojo de Dios (Gods Eye’s). All the students LOVED it!! And I love how Ben in Grade 2 ALWAYS extends the activity - have a look at the photo below!!! AMAZING WORK BEN!!

Preps - The Preps are learning about Vincent van Gogh and creating a watercolour/collage painting of his famous artwork, The Starry Night.’ This activity introduces many new concepts and opportunities to experiment with a mixed media to create an art work.

Grade One / Two - The students in Grade 1 and 2 are creating a self portrait using inspiration from the famous POP artist Roy Lichtenstein. He is known for his comic strip cartoons and the use of Ben Dots.

Grade Three / Four - The students in Grade 3 and 4 are creating papier mâché newspaper minions. (this is why we need a few more newspapers!!) This will be a 3D piece and will require students to wear an art smock. We do have a supply of smocks at school but students may want to bring their own from home.

Grade Five / Six - The students in Grade 5 and 6 are sketching, then painting a pet portrait. This can be a portrait of their own pet or an animal they would like as a pet. Students are using acrylic paints so again an art smock will be needed. This do not need to be flash smock… an old shirt or t-shirt will be fine.

If you have any questions, please contact myself or Jess.

2024 in the art room is going to be BIG and we have lots of FUN stuff planned!! Yippee!!
