Reading Buddies
Last week our Reading Buddies program officially began. This year we have a record number of big buddies from Years 9 and 10 who are partnered with a little buddy from Years 3 or 4. They meet every fortnight to further enhance the literacy skills of our younger students whilst developing a strong bond as the year goes on. This is one of many collaborative ventures that is strengthening the connections between students in the Junior School and Senior School.
Our first session saw the buddies being introduced to each other, find a comfortable place, and read a book together. It is fantastic to see the Stage 5 students develop their leadership skills and provide a mentoring role to our Stage 2 students, whilst the younger students thrive on spending time with their older counterparts. It has been a wonderful start, and we can already see that this will be another successful year of this program, leading to better literacy outcomes and lasting friendships being formed.
GRIP Leadership Conference
On Thursday 27th March, the 12 members of the Year 6 Leadership team attended the GRIP leadership conference in Chatswood along with hundreds of other leaders from all over Sydney. The day was full of presentations, interactive activities, games and networking opportunities and our leaders enjoyed every minute of it. It was wonderful to see our students work alongside other leaders, discussing opportunities on how to lead improvement at their own schools and how different that might look in each setting.
There were many opportunities for students to contribute to the whole group. Our students were impressive in the confidence they showed when answering questions in front of the conference and in the way they interacted with students from all the other schools. Overall the day was a huge success with every student getting something different out of the day.
In their own words…
My favourite part of the leadership conference meeting was, meeting other leaders from other schools. I really enjoyed interacting with them in the games we played. It was great hearing about their schools and all their plans for their leadership time. It was also very educational to learn about the 4 traits of being a leader 1. Being an example to others, 2. Being the voice of others, 3. Being a Helper, 4. Willingness to lead.
I am excited to incorporate these into my leadership style. I have left the leadership conference feeling very inspired to be a better leader and be a role model for the other students.” (Sofia)
My favourite thing that happened on this conference in Chatswood was learning how to be a great leader, and how to grow to become one. I loved it when they played games like Guess Who with us and tied it up with an important leaderships lesson about doing tasks in stages and much more. I learned a lot about good leadership qualities and tools to use as a leader, which I will try to use throughout this year and beyond. (Austin)
My favourite part of the conference was how interactive it was, watching the videos of how to make a difference, and the games. (Harper)
I learned how to be a good leader, how important it is to share leadership ideas with others and, how to work together as a team. (Adeline)
