Grade 5 News for Term 3

After a busy Term 2, the Grade 5 team warmly welcomes an exciting Term 3! This term brings many interesting events and opportunities to the grade 5 cohort. We are very excited to present the students with the following events: 

  • Week 1: Science Discovery Dome Incursion
  • Week 2: RoboGals incursion
  • Week 3: Athletics (Wednesday 6th of August)
  • Week 5: Book Week Celebrations (Friday 22nd of August)
  • Week 7: Father’s / Special person’s day stall
  • Week 9: Open Share Afternoon

Literacy

We have been implementing a block teaching approach to literacy this year. This means we are covering all areas of literacy across a larger period of time. This includes a Daily Review for literacy, Oral Reading Fluency, Spelling and Morphology, Language Comprehension, Dictation and Writing.

 

During Term 3 students will:

  • Participate in reading activities that investigate Global Citizenship and Earth’s place in Space, developing their ability to interpret information and make connections.
  • Engage in comprehensive novel studies using R.J. Palacio’s “Wonder” to develop comprehension skills, such as inferring, visualisation, making connections, and multiple perspectives
  • Continue the Spelling Mastery program, which targets students at their particular needs. Students will continue to work in spelling groups based on the pre-assessment task they completed in Term 1.
  • Follow the writing process to create information reports on various topics
  • Continue developing Sentence Fluency and Conventions through The Writing Revolution
  • Craft a persuasive piece on Mars to present and create a structured narrative.

Numeracy

Students will continue to participate in scaffolding numeracy lessons targeting their multiplicative thinking and problem solving. Our lessons with the Daily Review, a short 10 minute slide presentation to consolidate previously taught content. In addition, the areas that will be covered this term are:

  • Multiplication and division - applying strategies to solve problems
  • Fractions and decimals - understanding their place value
  • Volume and capacity - creating a Mars base station
  • Simple financial plans 

Units of Work

Our units of study will explore multiple topics this term such as Global CitizenshipAustralian Levels of Government and Earth and space science.  Students will develop an understanding of the following concepts:

  • What it means to be a Global Citizen
  • Human Rights & the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals
  • Why a country needs a system of government
  • Australia's system of government and the three levels of government
  • Earth’s place in space 
  • Mars exploration

Homework

Homework will commence in week 2. There is a slight change in the requirements for homework this term, allowing student voice in the reading activity they choose each week. Students are expected to:

  • read for a daily minimum of 30-40 minutes, 5 times a week
  • complete a reading task of their choice from the grid provided and record details in their log
  • complete at least two Essential Assessment tasks each week and record details on the slide provided
  • task linked to our units of work (space science) to be completed each week

Wellbeing

In our Respectful Relationships lessons, students will be looking at:

  • identifying stressors and stress management strategies
  • help seeking and understanding when and who to talk to in order to solve a problem
