EROSION EXPERIMENT

Students participated in a planting experiment to learn how trees protect soil from wind and water erosion. They cut plastic drink containers in half, added potting mix using masks and gloves and planted cress seeds. They added enough water to each planter to moisten the soil. This enabled the seeds to sprout and grow. Students observed the growth of the roots to hold the soil. Cress can be cut, washed and used in sandwiches. Cutting the cress will encourage more to grow. If you would like to try this experiment, you will find it in THE KITCHEN PANTRY SCIENTIST: ECOLOGY FOR KIDS BOOK or go online.

APPLE HARVEST

The Granny Smith apple tree which was netted last year has been very productive. We counted forty-eight apples which weighed five kilograms. The apples have been stewed for the Food Technology programs. Students and staff will get to try the apples prepared in a variety of recipes.
