Subject Selection Process

As educators, we know that getting the curriculum right will make all the difference, in our students’ learning and outcomes. We understand that for our students and their families, subject selection represents an important step in their education.

Our Subject Selection process is unapologetically rigorous – this is to ensure that boys are well supported throughout the important decision making that occurs in selecting the subjects they plan to study.

In making choices for next year, my advice to students and families is to consult as many people as you can. Try to visit tertiary institutions during the Open Day season. At school consult with your Homeroom Teacher, your classroom teachers, your Year Level Coordinators, Head of School, or our Careers Team at the Pathways Hub so that whatever choices you make, you can feel confident in your decision making.

Also, one of the key things in this is ensuring that when it comes to subject selection, students are placed in subjects that best align with their individual talents and interests – this is by far the biggest indicator of future success. If you are good at something and enjoy it, you are far more likely to experience success in that subject.

Our subject selection process begins with the release of our Subject Information Booklets. Today, each family of students going into Years 9-12 in 2025 will receive a communication that includes a link to access digital copies of the booklets. In addition, a Subject Information Evening will be held for all families, on Thursday 18 July.

The structure of the evening will include a presentation for students transitioning from Years 8 and 9 into Years 9 and 10 in 2025, as well as a presentation for students transitioning from Years 10 and 11 into Years 11 and 12 in 2025. We have provided two opportunities for families to attend the relevant presentations. You can opt to attend the presentation time/s that best suits your family. The presentations will be recorded for those families unable to attend in person.

In addition, we are providing all students and their families with an opportunity to speak 1:1 with Heads of Faculty and subject specialists in each subject area.

An outline of the Subject Information Evening is as follows:

4:30pm-5pm

Subject Selection Presentation: Years 9&10 2025 – Pavilion

Subject Selection Presentation: Years 11&12 2025 – Wilding Wing

5pm-6pm

Heads of Faculty 1:1 for Years 9-12 2025 – Wilding Wing

6pm-6:30pm

Subject Selection Presentation: Years 9&10 2025 – Pavilion

Subject Selection Presentation: Years 11&12 2025 – Wilding Wing

In addition to the Subject Information Evening, at school students will attend subject information sessions led by our Heads of School. And of course, our Pathways Hub is open throughout the day, for students to consult with our Careers Team.

Boys going into Year 11 in 2025 will also be asked to attend a 1:1 interview with one of our academic advisors, to discuss their subject selections. These interviews will be held on Monday 22 July and Thursday 25 July, in the Wilding Wing. Further details and interview booking information will go out to families in the first week back in Term 3.

Should you have any questions about the subject selection process, or if you require further assistance or advice, please contact us here at the College, so that we can arrange for you to speak with one of our expert educators.
