Celebrating Diversity Week Activities

Understanding ourselves and others is at the heart of building an inclusive, vibrant school community, and this week 1AS students took a beautiful step in that direction through the picture book Hey Warrior - a highly recommended resource that helps children understand how their amygdala works to keep them safe.

Here’s a short video about the book: https://youtu.be/fzhka72RV30?si=3eT0gmbPqwzmgHyA

After exploring the story, students created drawings of their own “warrior,” imagining what this protective part of their brain might look like and discussing how it shows up in their day‑to‑day experiences. They also learned square (box) breathing, a calming strategy that helps them take slow, steady breaths to regulate their feelings and gently reassure their warrior that everything is okay. These early tools support children in coping with big emotions, building confidence, and recognising that everyone’s brain works in its own brilliant way!

To keep nurturing emotional literacy and empathy, here are some high‑quality children’s literature recommendations:

  • Early PrimaryThe Invisible String by Patrice Karst, The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas, All the Ways to Be Smart by Davina Bell
  • Middle PrimaryThe Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy, What to Do With a Problem by Kobi Yamada, The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld
  • Upper PrimaryWonder by R.J. Palacio, A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll, Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.

By deepening our understanding of ourselves and each other, IPS continue to grow a school community where every child feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

Sports Reports

Our Year 6 students delivered some eloquent sports reports at Monday's assembly.  It was pleasing to hear how our school values are reflected in their speeches.  When they reported losses they were respectful and showed how they persisted even when things weren't going their way.
