Colours for Joy – My Heart of Sunshine

Focus:

Exploring how colours can express emotions through a body outline artwork.

Description:

Students begin by tracing around their own body (or a partner’s) on large paper to create a life-sized outline. Inside this outline, they explore how different colours can represent feelings of joy, happiness, and love.

As a class, they discuss how yellow is often associated with warmth, sunshine, and joy. Students then create a yellow heart in the centre of their chest area to symbolise happiness and love.

Inside or around the heart, students can write or draw the names of people or pets they love — those who make their hearts feel bright.

Around the rest of the body, students may add other joyful colours, patterns, and symbols that represent energy, friendship, and positivity.

Learning Focus:

  • Understanding how colours can express emotions.
  • Using body outlines to represent self and feelings.
  • Connecting art to personal meaning, relationships, and wellbeing.

Key Vocabulary:

colour, emotion, joy, yellow, love, heart, expression
