Term 2 Week 6

This week's edition of next week @ FHS comes to you from the state principal conference. I've been lucky enough to sit in on workshops about the latest research into how people learn, new ways to structure school leadership teams and an interesting session about the use of artificial intelligence in schools. But enough about me, we have also had a busy week at school with staff and our student leaders getting an opportunity to have a first look at our proposed curriculum and timetable changes for next year.

Our Curriculum working group is meeting again next week to go through the feedback from staff before a revised version will be shared with families by the end of the term. We are looking at orienting the school to give students greater agency and control over aspects of their learning whilst increasing engagement and academic rigour (it's a lot but we are an ambitious lot and believe we have a pretty good plan).

This week we have also had a contingent of our staff working with the University of Melbourne New Metrics program, sharing our progress in the capturing and celebration of the core competencies that students take with them well beyond school.

And we started the week last Saturday with a great gardening session with the buildings and environments group who did an amazing job tending to the garden at the front of the school. We will be having a big planting day soon so keep an eye out for more information about that.

Looking ahead to next week

Monday - Learning Enhancement after school: don't forget that every Monday we have teachers available to support students with any school work that needs to be completed, whether it is homework that has been set, work that you didn't finish in class or you just want a quiet place to come and do some extra study. It's in the TDU and everyone is welcome.

Tuesday - Divisional Cross Country: students from Years 7-10 will be heading out to the divisional cross country event at Princess Park on Tuesday (only inner-city kids could consider a run in princess park a 'cross-country event). Good luck to everyone, may your feet be blister free.

Surveys and assessments: Throughout the week students will be asked to complete the Attitude to school survey and our year 7 and 9 students have been selected by the department to test next year's NAPLAN questions (here's hoping making students do extra NAPLAN assessment doesn't negatively influence their opinions).

Friday - Year 8 Engage Rock climbing: Students involved in our engage program will be out on Friday testing their skills and their strength at the Hardrock indoor rock climbing centre.
