Year 1/2 Classroom News – Week 4 Newsletter

Greetings from Year 1/2.

We are already halfway through Term 3 and our Year 1/2 learners continue to show curiosity, creativity, and a strong commitment to their learning goals. Across all key learning areas, students are engaging in rich and meaningful tasks, building knowledge and skills in a variety of exciting ways.

English This term, our English program has celebrated the richness of First Nations voices through NAIDOC Week celebrations, quality indigenous texts and Dreaming stories. Students have explored themes of Country, belonging and storytelling, building their comprehension through oral retells and shared writing. We have also enjoyed two of Cathy Freeman’s inspiring books, which have prompted class discussions around personal achievements, persistence and pride in identity. Students have responded with writing that connects to both the author’s message and their own experiences.

I will send over the stories for you to scan in here please Sal. They are on the blue desk in my room if you wouldn’t mind scanning them, please.

Mathematics In Maths, we’ve been investigating early multiplication through grouping and repeated addition. Using hands-on materials and real-world problems, students are learning to make and describe equal groups, helping them see the early patterns that underpin times tables. Our warm-ups and fluency games are a highlight of the day, encouraging students to think flexibly about numbers and apply their strategies with increasing confidence. Ask your child if they can skip-count to 100 by 5s or 200 by 10s.

PDHPE / Sport We’ve been developing our ball skills in weekly sport sessions, with a focus on throwing, catching and handball. Unfortunately, all our sport lessons have been undercover, due to inclement weather and an extremely muddy oval! Students are learning to move with control and purpose, while cooperating with teammates and demonstrating good sportsmanship. Through partner and group challenges, they are refining their aim, coordination and timing – all important building blocks for team sports and active play.

Religion This term we continue our unit Reflecting God’s Goodness, where students are learning how we can live as followers of Jesus. Through scripture, prayer and discussion, students are exploring Jesus’ commandment to love one another and recognising ways this is shown in our classroom and wider community. Stories of kindness and care are shared daily, and we continue to strengthen our Living Well, Learning Well commitments: I am safe, I am valued, I am a learner.

HSIE – Geography Our People and Places unit is helping students develop a strong sense of place and connection. Students are exploring the places they live in and belong to, sharing what makes those places special to them and recognising how this may differ for others. Through maps, photos and fieldwork around our school, students will learn how places can be represented and how people care for and impact their environments.

Creative Arts In connection with our English and HSIE learning, students have been exploring Indigenous Australian art forms. We’ve been inspired by the colours, symbols and techniques of dot painting and have created some stunning artworks of our own. Students have also enjoyed making beaded bracelets and collaborative murals with Jen, that reflect this term’s NAIDOC theme. These creative tasks allow students to express themselves while deepening their appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Science Our Earth and Space unit has sparked lots of wonder and conversation. Students are observing changes in the sky and landscape, tracking weather patterns, and exploring day and night. Through stories, experiments and visual media, they are beginning to understand how the Earth’s resources are used and why it’s important to care for them. Discussions around sustainability are thoughtful and practical, encouraging children to become stewards of the planet in their everyday choices. Mr Hyatt will continue this unit on his return.

Working Towards Our GoalsThroughout the term, students are continuing to set and reflect on personal learning goals. Whether it’s improving their writing stamina, mastering a new number strategy or demonstrating kindness and cooperation, we are proud of the way students are taking ownership of their learning journey. Thanks for sharing our stories.
