Reading I Writing I Speaking & Listening
In English, we will foster students’ love for reading and writing by:
- Building fluency and expression by encouraging students to read in a natural, expressive and fluid manner.
- Developing reading strategies that help students decode unfamiliar words in texts, through strengthening phonics skills and phonemic awareness.
- Fostering comprehension skills, including literal and inferential comprehension strategies, and encouraging students to apply their existing knowledge to gain meaning from texts.
- Maintaining reading of the Magic 300 Words and encouraging students to apply these high frequency words in their writing
- Continuing to consolidate writing skills including letter formation, finger spacing and punctuation (e.g. knowing when to use capital letters, lowercase letters, full stops, exclamation and question marks)
- Exploring Recount and Procedural writing techniques and learning how to add interesting details to their writing
