Year 1/2 Learning

Year 1/2 is enjoying their learning. We’re looking forward to our new playground and being able to use it soon.  We have loved watching the progress, although we don’t like the loud noise!

In Maths for the last few weeks we have been learning about Multiplication- or forming groups.  We have been learning how to:

  • Count in multiples using rhythmic and skip counting.
  • Use skip counting patterns
  • Model and use equal groups of objects to represent multiplication
  • Represent and explain multiplication as the combining of equal groups
  • Represent multiplication and division problems.

Here are some things you can ask us……

Basic Multiplication Understanding:

  • Can you show me how you make 2 groups of 3?
  • What does 3 times 2 mean?
  • Can you draw a picture of 4 groups of 2?

Real-Life Examples:

  • If you have 3 plates and put 2 biscuits on each plate, how many biscuits do you have in total?
  • We have 5 toy cars, and each car has 4 wheels. How many wheels are there altogether?

Using Objects:

  • Can you use these blocks to show me 3 groups of 4?
  • If we have 6 apples and want to put them into 2 equal groups, how many apples will be in each group?

Word Problems:

  • If you have 3 bags and there are 5 marbles in each bag, how many marbles are there in total?
  • Imagine you have 4 friends, and you give each friend 3 stickers. How many stickers did you give out?

Visual Representation:

  • Can you draw 5 groups of 2 flowers?
  • Show me how you can make 3 rows of 4 dots each. How many dots are there?

We are always busy during English. We have an Initialit lesson every morning, then we learn our spelling, our writing and our reading.  Mrs Flanagan said that we are getting so much better with our writing.  In class we are trying to improve our vocabulary when we speak and write (We call them ‘clever’ or ‘WOW’ words)

For example, did you know that there are lots of words you can say instead of ‘said?’

cried, screamed, whispered, laughed, screeched, sobbed, wailed, mumbled, murmured, asked, demanded, exclaimed, shouted, remarked, answered, retorted.

Can you think of any more?

If so, please send them in to the Year 1/2 class.

Year 2 has also been learning about adjectives.  An adjective describes a noun. Last week, Year 2 played a game with Mrs Flanagan called ‘Would you Rather?’ using descriptive adjectives.  Some of these made Mrs Flanagan feel quite ill!

Shane and Brayden

Would you rather eat a rawdisgusting fish or a mouldysmelly bird?

Ella and Harry

Would you rather eat ghost pepper and spicy sauce pizza or rotten fish oil on liver?

Oscar and Archie

Would you rather eat sloppymouldy, disgustingly rotten flesh or dried up cow poop?

Archer and Levi

Would you rather eat rawspicy brain or a largedirty nose?

Mackenzie, McKenzie and Evie

Would you rather eat mouldygreen eggs or a squishyred apple?

Mila and Fergus

Would you rather eat fifty mouldy, stripey jelly beans or one filthy lolly that has been dropped in a dirty toilet?

Bella

Would you rather eat a hairy, mouldy rat, soaked in vomit or a rotten, prickly echidna dropped in a pit toilet?

In rotating  English groups this week some of the students had a task to write a story titled, ‘The Tricky Fox’ after we read a story of the same name.  Our challenge was to:

  • Have an interesting, captivating start;
  • Use WOW words that impress the reader;
  • Follow a narrative scaffold where there is an introduction, a complication and a resolution to the story;
  • Proofread and edit the story;
  • Publish the story by typing.  Here is Levi Williams’ example:

Tricky Fox by Levi W

One beautiful, sunny day, there was a fox who liked freshly boiled hen!  He was waiting patiently outside a pen, full of tender looking chickens.  His mouth watered.

Unfortunately the fox knew that all foxes are targeted by farmers and are shot at for their destruction.  The fox decided to make a deal - an ‘I can’t eat you’ deal.

“Brark, Brark” the chickens answered yes happily.

“But your owner has to feed me.  Maybe even some cat food.” answered the fox.

“Brark, Brark” the chickens agreed again.

From a distance the farmer saw the fox talking to his chooks and he incorrectly guessed what would happen next.

‘Tchk tchk, BANG’ went his gun. ‘SPLATTER’ went the fox and one chook.  The farmer’s 50 calibre went through both of them.  There was blood everywhere.  It was like a fire of red.

Well……….it seems like the deal was not a success, for the fox at least!

 SPORT

We are so excited that we are learning Taekwondo, a Martial Art from South Korea, as a sport on Wednesdays.  We have Instructor Dave from Tamworth and we are learning the tenets or beliefs of this martial art, such as ‘respect, ‘discipline,’ perseverance’ and ‘self-control.’  We are also practising punching and kicking techniques in a sequence.  We know that the word Taekwondo can be translated as tae ("strike with foot"), kwon ("strike with hand"), and do ("the art or way"). The whole class voted that this was our most exciting school sport we’ve done.

Have a great week everyone.

Love from Year 1/2.
