Diocesan Athletics Carnival Wrap Up

Under clear skies at the Tamworth Athletics Centre, 16 students proudly represented St Patrick's at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival. The event commenced with a ceremonial march past, featuring Albert and Digby, which marked the beginning of the day's activities. Following this, the carnival officially kicked off with the 800m races. Josie and Lucie were the first to compete, finishing 4th and 8th in their respective heats, with Josie ultimately securing 4th place overall. In the 11 Years Girls Section, Jessica and Grace F represented St Patrick's, with Jessica winning her heat and achieving 1st place overall, while Grace F finished 9th among all competitors. In the Junior Boys 800m, Benji was our sole representative, finishing 9th in his heat, followed by Angus, who placed 11th overall in his race.

The vast majority of our students then participated in the 100m heats. Most of our team members ran exceptionally with a number of narrow defeats. Phoebe and Jessica excelled by winning their respective heats and securing a place in the finals. Levi and Archer also performed admirably, both qualifying for the Under 8 Year Boys 100m Final. Upon the conclusion of these finals, Phoebe and Jessica achieved an overall placement of 4th, while Archer and Levi earned qualification for the Polding Athletics Trials by finishing in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Our students then competed in the school relays. Our four teams that competed performed very well as we were the youngest team competing in each of our heats as well as the smallest school, where we had to compete against schools from Tamworth, Armidale, Gunnedah, Moree, Inverell, Glen Innes, Narrabri and Wee Waa.

Throughout this period, several students engaged in a variety of field events. In the shot put competition, Josie achieved a commendable second place in the Junior Girls Section, earning her a spot in the Armidale Diocese squad. Additionally, she secured third place in the Junior Girls Discus event. Jessica finished in 12th place in the 11 Years Long Jump, while Grace S attained 4th place in both the 11 Years Girls High Jump and Shot Put. Albert achieved 8th place in the Senior Boys High Jump and 5th place in the Senior Boys Long Jump.

Next came the 200m and a number of our students were placed in the top three of their respected heats. Special mention goes to: Jessica who won her heat, while Josie and Henry came 2nd in their respective heats.

The final running event of the meet was the 1500m and our three participants went very well. Jessica came first overall in the 11 Years Girls, Josie came 2nd in the Junior Girls and Benji came 6th in the Junior Boys. Both Jessica and Josie gained selection to represent the Armidale Diocese in this event at the Polding Athletics Carnival that will be held in September.

As previously noted, Josie experienced an exceptional day, securing second place in both the 1500m and Shot Put events, as well as third place in the Junior Girls Discus. Her accomplishments were recognised with the award of Joint Runner Up in the Junior Girls Section, marking a remarkable achievement.

Thanks again to the parents and grandparents who attended and supported our students on the day! It is very much appreciated. We wish Jessica, Josie, Archer and Levi all of the best when they represent the Armidale Diocese at the Polding Athletics Carnival on Friday 13th September at Glendale.

Diocesan Football/Netball and Small Schools Gala Day

Like last year, St Patrick's will be entering teams in both football and netball as well as in small schools competition at the Sports Gala Day that is going to be held at Tamworth on Thursday 26th September. Hopefully when the playground and drainage works are completed,  Years 3-6 students will begin practising their football and netball skills in designated physical education lessons as well as during recess and lunchtime. Our team squads will be announced shortly.

The school has already organised a bus for all students to travel to and from Tamworth and more information, including costing and permission will be sent home via the Compass soon.

St Patrick's Primary Sports Handbook

St Patrick's now has an official sports handbook and it has been updated after the school swimming carnival held recently. This book is designed to give all members associated with our school a clearer understanding of when our school conducts our various sporting carnivals, the processes/qualifying times involved for students who want to represent our school at Diocesan sporting events as well as an explanation of the representative sporting pathways your child may want to undertake in their respective sports.

Attached below is the revised version of this manual, which now contains the latest information on Jessica's and Josie's records at the athletics carnival.
