Middle School

Mr Michael Busscher, Head of Middle School

Let me begin my final Crest report for Term 1 by wishing everyone a fantastic Easter break. This offers everyone the chance of renewal in preparation for what will be an equally busy Term 2.

It seems just like yesterday that we started the year and here we are at the end of the term. In what has been a typically very busy term, we have been able to run the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, our Year 9 The Rite Journey Team Building Days, NAPLAN and numerous Assessment Tasks have all been completed.

On 1 April, all Year 10s at the College will attend their first of three ‘Tomorrow Man’ modules. The first module, entitled Breaking the man code aims to challenge traditional notions of manhood and empower individuals to embrace a more positive and inclusive version of masculinity.  A key focus of the module is enhancing your son’s ability to form meaningful social connections. Through guided exercises and discussions, men learn to engage in more open and honest conversations, fostering emotional resilience. This skill set is crucial for developing and maintaining healthy relationships across all aspects of life. By challenging toxic masculinity and promoting a more balanced approach to manhood, the module directly addresses men's mental health concerns. Year 10s learn that seeking support and prioritizing mental wellbeing are signs of strength, not weakness.

Next term, we start with Year 9 students having the opportunity (a non-compulsory event) to attend dance lessons culminating in a Year 9 Social with Year 9 students from Loreto College. I hope that all boys will consider joining our dancing program with Loreto as this has been a highlight over many years. Three dance classes will be held at St Patrick’s College in the gym prior to the social. The social will be held at O’Connell Hall Dawson Street on Wednesday, 4 June from 6.30pm for a 7pm start and finishing at 9pm. St Patrick’s College and Loreto College staff will supervise the students.

Dance Lesson dates

Dance Lesson 1: Monday, 12 May (3:30pm-4:30pm, St Patrick’s College Gym)

Dance Lesson 2: Monday, 19 May (3:30pm-4.30pm, St Patrick’s College Gym)

Dance Lesson 3: Tuesday, 26 May (3:30pm-4.30 pm, St Patrick’s College Gym)

The lessons culminate in a Year 9 Dance Social for participants of the dancing program only on Wednesday, 4 June from 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start until 9.00pm finish.   Students are expected to dress appropriately for this occasion without going to great expense (semi-formal).  No runners, please. Every student participating in the dance lessons will be expected to attend the social. An invitation to all Year 9 students to attend and payment details will arrive in the first week of Term 2.

I hope that everyone has had a great start to the Middle School, but with only one week remaining in this Term, the holidays can appear to be in sight but there is much work that is still required to be completed; with most subjects concluding with their assessment tasks in this time frame.

Hang in there everyone!
