Year 6 - 2021

Welcome to the 2021 school year!  We hope you had an enjoyable break! Please take the time to read the IMPORTANT information below to support your Year 6 child’s learning.

We also ask that you keep informed and action requests as they are posted to the Compass News Feed throughout the year.

SMART Spelling

To support our whole-school SMART Spelling (Michelle Hutchison) approach, your child will bring home a spelling sheet each Monday  with the words they have chosen. Please help your child to learn these words and their meanings throughout the week, in preparation for their spelling test each Friday.

Daily Reading

Regular reading is expected and a record of the reading material should be kept in the  the students’ Home Diary.  Your child is responsible for having a novel at school for daily reading, which they can bring from home or borrow from the school Library.

Homework

All students will be given a set of homework guidelines. Homework will generally be set on a Monday and is due back on Friday.

Diary

Student diaries are expected to be signed by a parent/guardian each week. Notes to teachers should NOT be written in the student diary – please see ‘Contacting your Teacher’ below.

Diaries are due back to school on Fridays.

Early Morning Maths

We offer ‘Early Morning Maths’ (8.30am – 9.00am) every Wednesday for students wishing to gain additional tutoring. All Year 6 students are welcome and encouraged to attend these very valuable sessions. Students are able to revise topics covered in Maths lessons and complete maths homework or extension activities. Early Morning Maths commencement to be advised.

Essential Assessment

An online differentiated and personalised assessment tool known as 'Essential Assessment' is used in Years 1 - 6 to deliver a whole school approach to formative and summative assessments in Maths. Essential Assessment is aligned with the curriculum and allows students to grow their knowledge at their own pace.

After a Pre/Post Assessment is undertaken by a student, Essential Assessment identifies individualised learning goals and assigns the student tasks based on their personalised results – this is called My Numeracy. My Numeracy tasks may be used by teachers for both in-class learning and homework.

Curriculum/Units of Inquiry

Throughout the year students will explore six transdisciplinary themes, through Units of Inquiry. Mathematics and English require elements of explicit teaching but may also have a focus through Inquiry. Humanities, Science, Health, Technologies and Civics are studied through Inquiry learning. In the process the students will be challenged to explore, research, question, predict and solve problems. Inquiry engages students actively in their own learning.

Units of Inquiry will be posted on Compass along with 'Curriculum News' updates to keep you informed.

Specialist Programs

Information about our 2021 Specialist Programs (Japanese, PE, Art, Music and Library), including a timetable will be available on Compass soon - please support your child and ensure they have the appropriate items on the correct day.

A ‘Specialist News’ update will also be provided each term via Compass.

Year 6 Graduation Celebrations

The Year 6 students will attend some very special celebrations in the last week of school - The Graduation Event, a Pyjama Party and Big Day Out (dates TBA).These events provide the students with a well-structured opportunity to have some fun, celebrate their journey through school and spend some time together. Most importantly, it allows our students to officially graduate from BNPS.

A Graduation Parent Information Evening will be held in Term 4. This meeting aims to clarify any general questions about the structure of Graduation, teacher/student roles and parent responsibilities.

Contacting your Teachers

Notes may be passed directly to your classroom teacher or you can send an email (marked to the attention of your child’s teacher) to:

beaumaris.north.ps@education.vic.gov.au

Informal discussions may be arranged upon request at any time throughout the year to discuss specific issues however please be assured that we will contact you should we have any concerns.

Finally...

Don’t forget to check out our A-Z Parent Guide - this (along with loads of other information!) can be accessed on our comprehensive website.

We encourage you to ask your child about what went well for them at school, to generate conversation about their learning and friendships.

We look forward to open communication with you throughout the year and hope to make your child's final year at BNPS  special and memorable.

Kind regards

The Year 6 Team
