Primary School News

Mr Liam Beatty, Head of Primary School

Dear Primary Families,

The cold mornings and crisp days of winter are certainly upon us, providing a subtle reminder that a well-deserved winter break is just around the corner.

Last week I travelled with Bruce Mr McPhee (Deputy Head of College) and Ms Meagan Loane (College Registrar) to Toowoomba for FarmFest. This was a great opportunity to not only promote the College to rural families but provide a ‘touchpoint’ for many of our current and former families who reside in the west. On Friday evening I enjoyed joining our Year 6 families at their parent function; many thanks to Mr Jim Gordon and members of the P&F for their hospitality and for providing a platform for our parents to socialise.

As we enter the final week of the school term, it has been made very clear to the boys that our expectations for their behaviour, respect and attitude to learning do not change. In fact, they should be at their very best as they prepare assignments and complete exams.

Primary School Mass

Tomorrow morning students are asked to be at school by 7:45am for our Primary School Mass which commences in The Chapel at 8:00am. This is an important opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate the Eucharist and give thanks for our term together. Thank you to Ashgrove Voices and the Music Department who will be leading our hymns for the occasion.

Primary Athletics Carnival

Our Primary Athletics Carnival will take place this Thursday. Please see information in the Primary Sport section below about the format of the day. A reminder that there will be no tuckshop or canteen available to Primary students on the day.

Term 2 Sport – Thank You

Last weekend our Football, Chess and Rugby teams played completed the final round of their season. In total, we had 20 teams wearing the blue and gold each weekend, all of whom represented the College with pride. Congratulations to all students who represented the College in sport during Term 2. Whilst it was a season disrupted by weather and illness, I know that all the boys enjoyed the opportunity to represent the College. A thank you to our Primary teachers (Mr Pelly, Mr Trebbin, Mr Coles, Mr Wheeler and Mr Jones) who coached a sport team and continued to build valuable and authentic relationships with our boys and their families. My sincere thanks also to Mr John Lambourne (Head of Primary Sport) for all his efforts in ensuring the season ran smoothly despite some disruptions. I look forward to seeing many of you around the grounds at basketball, athletics, rugby league and tennis next term.

From the Primary Pastoral Leader – Michael Connolly

Ping Pong Tournament

Congratulations to the 64 boys who battled it out in the Primary Ping Pong Championships played over three days last week. All the boys showed great sportsmanship and table etiquette throughout the tournament.

Special mention to Charlie Bradford and Timothy Watts who won the Year 5 and Year 6 competitions respectively. Timothy then defeated Charlie to be crowned Primary Champion for Term 2.

The competition was such a success that we are having a doubles tournament starting this week for all the boys who have signed up with a mate to take part in this event. Good luck to all involved!

Strong Finish to The Term

At our morning assembly on Monday, the boys were reminded to do their absolute best in all areas of their schooling in order to finish the term off strongly. From the way they revise for their assessments to the way they treat their classmates, all boys have a responsibility to do their best and be 100% Marist, 100% of the Time.

Champagnat Awards

Congratulations, in advance, to the ten students who will receive our Primary Champagnat Awards next Tuesday. We look forward to announcing these very special awards next week at our final assembly on Tuesday.

Long Service Leave

As many of you will already know, I am taking Long Service Leave next term so I will not be around during Term Three. I would like to thank you for everything you have done for your sons to get them to this, the halfway point, of the year and I wish you all a wonderful holiday perid coming up. I look forward to seeing all the boys, any many of you again, at the start of Term Four. In my absence, please direct any pastoral enquiries to Mr Matthew Jones who will be acting Primary Pastoral Leader for the term.

Debating Update – Mrs Robyn Brown

The Round Robin Competition

The year 6 debating teams have had a stupendous week! The competition concluded with both teams winning their final debates. The topic, which was argued with great enthusiasm, was “That homework should be abolished”. The team with Harry Player, Will Webster, Kayden Kyoung and Teddy Armstrong were undefeated throughout the competition. Such a great effort!

The other team consisting of Will Thomas, Caelan Rabie, Henry Walker and Roman Kerwin-Torrisi were defeated only once. The growth in the boy’s research skills, confidence and rebuttal ability was clearly evident by the end of the competition. Well done boys!

QDU Debating Competition

It has been a busy week with debating for the year 6 boys as the QDU Competition also commenced. A number of boys have transitioned across to this competition, so have debated twice this week, which is an extraordinary effort! Both teams debated the topic “That we should ban school uniforms”. It was another lively debate, with both teams being successful on the night against St Peter’s and Kelvin Grove S.C.  Congratulations boys!

The 6.1 team consists of Harry Player, Kayden Kyoung, Thomas Davis, Connor O’Rourke and Nick Steffens. The 6.2 team consists of Henry Walker, Teddy Armstrong, Lucas Weigl, Kaelan Mulqueen and Ed Hancock.
