Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend saw the conclusion to the AIC Chess, Rugby and Football seasons for 2022 with all matches at St Patrick’s College for their Back to Shorncliffe day. It was a terrific atmosphere, and the boys really enjoyed playing in front of a big crowd.

We started the fixtures on Friday night where the 1st IV had to settle for a draw however overall it was a strong performance from the whole team on the night and a successful season all around. Thank you to Mr Humphry and Mr Bull for your leadership, organisation and guidance of the chess program.

Saturday saw football taking on St Pats at Shorncliffe however we had games again at multiple venues through the AIC. The 1st XI managed to secure a 2-2 draw in very difficult circumstances, having to play a player down for almost the entire match. The fact the St pats goalkeeper was the man of the match highlighted the performance the Marist boys managed to put on. Clearly, the two best performances of the season came in the last two weeks and with some younger players given an opportunity. There are two key messages from this, firstly, we need to be better prepared for the competition and need to step up in terms of what we expect of ourselves collectively, and secondly, the future is bright with the players coming through the program. Overall it was another dominant display with may quality performances and wins for Marist.

The 1st XV have had a frustrating season, with disruptions and injuries playing a significant part in the teams results. After a frustrating game the week before against St Peters the team were able to secure the win, coming from behind against an aggressive St Pats team who had passionate support. It was great to send the Year 12s out with a win. In what was another disrupted season, this time thanks to the weather both in pre-season and during the fixtures, that was frustrating for all and we never really were able to settle into a pattern. Overall Marist dominated the day against St Pats, and much like the football, there is a positive in the quality of play in the younger ages for the future. Though also like the football, the preparation across the program will need to be reviewed for the future.

Thank you and congratulations to all the Year 12 boys in chess, football and rugby for your contribution to Marist. It is my wish that you have found it an enjoyable and rewarding experience even if you did not achieve all your goals, and that you look back in the coming years of your time playing for Marist fondly. The boys you have played with will be friends for life and the memories will be the ties that bind you together. Best wishes for the future.

Football

Thank you to all the coaches and staff who have worked tirelessly this term to support the boys and provide learning opportunities for our young me to develop as athletes and as people. Not all lessons are positive, but they are important in our growth as young men. Thank you to the year co-ordinators, Mr Shane Wheeler, Mr Matt Jones, Mr Terry Quain, Ms Meagan Cook, Mr Blair Whitlock, Mr Derek Lennon and Mr Clancy Kuiters for your leadership of the boys and the coaches. Thank you to our 1st XI coaches Old Boy Mr Corey Brown, Mr Corey Lucas and Old Boy Mr Macklin Freke for your dedication, expertise and commitment to the boys.

1st XI

The 1st XI finished the season with a 2 all draw against St Patrick’s College. A red card in the first minute made it very tough for the boys but they managed to regroup and went on to dominate the first half, creating the vast majority of the chances. A great finish by Flynn Wiseman put Marist in front before a defensive error let St Pats back in the game in their first real attack. The team regrouped at half time and the game opened up in the second half in a very entertaining match with lots of chances at both ends. Flynn Wiseman scored a good goal and in reality, either team could have ended up with the win. Key performances came from captain Ryan Oostenbroek, James Woolaston and Harry Shield. Well done on a great season and thank you to the Year 12s for your contribution to football.

2nd XI

On Saturday, the 2nd boys lined up against St Patrick’s College and with the boys knowing it was their last game of the season they played with some fire. It was an even contest until St Pat’s got their foot on a cross that unfortunately back the back of the net against us. This did not phase the boys, and within 10 minutes our Left Back Dan Feltrin came up for a corner kick and banged the ball pass the Goalkeeper. We found ourselves at half time with a score line of 1-1. The Year 12 boys heading into the second half knew that this was their last half of soccer and they put in 100% effort and their bodies on the line, with Max Hubbard coping a boot to the head, unfortunately ending his game. Sadly, St Patrick’s scored 2 more goals that would have troubled goalkeepers at the A-League level and the 2nds finished off the season going down 1-3. Despite the loss, the boys kept their heads high and knew they would bounce back next season.

4th XI

In the final game of the season, the fearless fourths came up against a well-organised and structured St Patricks College (SPC) outfit. Our mid-fielders Alex Masel and Zen Sakai were up for the challenge making it difficult for SPC to get within attacking range. On occasions when the ball made it to our defensive end, as has been the case all season the skilful William Armstrong ably supported by Danny O’Rourke, Alem Fitzgerald and Doug Cowlishaw thwarted the SPC attacking attempts. SPC were running with a strong wind in the first half and with a score line of 0 – 0 at halftime, the feeling amongst the team was we had won the first half. Discussion of tactics during the break agreed on making better use of the wind to get the ball in the air, using the breeze and putting the fourths golden rule into play: if the ball is near the top of the box or just inside, just shoot!!! With some excellent crosses in the air put forward by Sam Patterson and Eoin Paznikov, and ricochets off defensive players, Joel Ephraims and Eion Paznikov were present to get the ball into the back of the net. The 2 – 0 score line finished the season with 3 strong wins.

Congratulations to the Year 12 members of the squad, playing their final football game for Marist: Zen Sakai, Doug Cowlishaw, Sam Patterson, Zack Newsham and Spencer Sharman.

5th XI

The 5th XI had a win 1:0 to finish the season. It was a close game with a lot of back and forth, and our Keeper Sam Collins was kept on his toes. Matt Sharland scored a lovely, diagonal goal. Jaspar Driml and Sam Allpass, our seniors, are to be congratulated for being very reliable, team players and showing us what being Marist is about this season. Sam was full of beans as a forward this game and Jaspar showed his flexibility playing half a game as forward and then defence. Ethan Clarke’s glasses broke mid game and despite this setback, he played on as a strong defender. Felix has to be recognised as a key player, that really held the team together all season, and finishing up as an unpassable defender. Addison Knight, who always put every ounce of energy and effort in, captained the mighty fifths for our last game. Well done to ALL the fifths – what a fantastic bunch.

Rugby

Marist Rugby is a huge program. There are 35 teams and over 50 staff involved in coaching and support roles. Thank you to everyone for your dedication to the sport, the College and most importantly the boys. While not the season we hoped for everyone, there is much to celebrate and look forward to in the future, and with some tweaking and some changes, we can provide an even better experience for everyone involved.

Thank you to Mr Mitch Reid and Mr Corey Lucas for stepping in at the last minute to support me in covering for the very late loss of our coordinator during the Easter holidays. This clearly presented significant challenges to us all but to everyone’s credit the whole program just got on with the job. Thank you to the coordinators for taking on additional responsibility and guiding your year levels, Mr Bas Pelly, Mr John Lambourne, Mr Chris Daykin, Ms Sharon Davidson, Mr David Meehan, Mr Peter McIntosh and Mr Peter Gaiter. Thank you also to our lead coaches Mr Anthony Mathison and Mr Tim Sedgwick for guiding our flagship team, and your expert mentorship of the boys.

For those who have not had enough rugby please see the ad at the end of the sport section for Next Gen coaching clinics in the holidays.

1st XV

Going into the last game of the year, both teams were battling for pride. After strong preparation and a hunger to finish the season on a high, the 1st XV travelled out to Shorncliffe to play against St Patrick’s College on what was a hostile Old Boys day. Right from the kickoff, we were able to put plenty of pressure on the opposition, eventually leading to a try to Bailey Caplick off the back of a strong maul by the forwards. St Patrick’s returned fire, getting on the scoreboard with a penalty goal, followed by two quick-fire tries. With St Patrick’s taking the lead, Bailey Caplick stepped up once again to score a try on the stroke of halftime, closing the gap to 17-15 in the home team’s favour. After a rocky start to the second half resulting in another penalty goal to St Pats, the Ashgrove boys turned to a more direct style of rugby resulting in good field position and increasing pressure on their opponents. Front rower Nick Gullo managed to generate plenty of momentum for Ashgrove in the second half, leading to young gun halfback Harry Condon capitalising on lazy defence around the ruck scoring two almost identical tries under the goalposts to seal the match for Marist, 29-20. The end result was a fitting way for the Year 12 members of the team to conclude their time representing the College in the famous the gold jersey.

Student Achievements

Two MCA Year 8 boys, Lachie Pawsie and Leo McKenna represented the school in the Met-North 12-14 year baseball School State Championships played at Runcorn from June 9-12.  The team played strong all weekend to make the gold medal match but unfortunately went down in the final to South Coast 7-3. Both boys played strongly with Lachie taking catching duties, and Leo pitching and playing shortstop. Leo McKenna was also selected for the 12-14 year QLD team at the end of the tournament, along with four of his teammates.
