Term 4 Week 3

English

Reading

This week in Reading we are exploring 'perspective' through the text, 'The Day the Crayons Quit' by Drew Daywalt. We will also continue to develop our literal, inferential and evaluative comprehension skills through the use of 'Behind The News' clips. Students view a current affairs segment and respond to questions that focus on tuning-in to the key ideas and understandings of the news segment.

Writing

The students have been exploring the purpose and nature of the writing form 'Poetry'. They focused on understanding how word choice is key to expressing thoughts, emotions and entertaining the reader. Last week they planned, drafted and published a Cinquain poem and we were very impressed by the results. This week we will continue to follow the stages of the writing process to write "I Am" poems reflecting on ourselves.

Word Study

The students have obviously worked hard during home learning to learn the 70 codes and their sounds, which has meant we can smoothly transition back to learning some of the key spelling & reading rules.

Mathematics

Number and Algebra

Last week the students tuned into division, using the picture book "The Doorbell Rang" and looked at the language of sharing. They used what they had learnt during the multiplication unit to show division as arrays. This week the students will be learning to solve division using known multiplication facts and learning how to solve short division problems with and without remainders.

Measurement and Geometry.

Last week the students inquired into data handling and graphing. They identified different types of graphs and their features and explored what graphs show through analysis of the data.

This week the students will work through the four point plan for data investigation: Pose a question, collect and collate the data, represent the data and interpret and analysis the data. They will complete an investigation using a pack of Smarties.

Unit of Inquiry

Last week we explored the power of Art to inspire, illuminate, educate, motivate and transform. Students worked in groups to broaden their thinking and understanding through specific examples. They used a collaborative group process called the 'Expert Jigsaw' which requires discussion, questioning and reporting of their learning.

In the coming week students will learn the art of animation film making through a Stop Motion workshop. Collaborating in groups they will plan a storyboard, create background scenes, film the action frame by frame and create an iMovie. Identifying the skills and the creative expression involved, students will experience the artistic talents of cinematography as an art form.

Wellbeing

This week we have focused on building relationships and fostering appropriate interactions for all students. Wellbeing will continue to be a priority over the coming week. Reviewing the class Essential Agreement,  giving students tasks which provide opportunities for collaboration and building up classroom concentration and listening skills will support this.
