FIRE Carriers

'Promoting respect, fairness and inclusion in the spirit of reconciliation.'

FIRE Carriers @ Fatima

We would like to acknowledge First Nations people past present and emerging and the land we share with them and we acknowledge the animals and the resources that we have.

A FIRE Carrier is someone who learns about First Nations people and their culture and then shares it with their school community. On Friday we went to Thornbury to the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry and learnt about First Nations people and their connection to Mother Earth. We had a Smoking Ceremony with Auntie Viki. She put one hand over the fire and then commissioned us as FIRE Carriers by putting her hand over our eyes, mouth, forehead, heart, ear and arm.

We wrote our thoughts on what Reconciliation is and what a FIRE Carrier is. We also wrote on a piece of paper our ideas of what we can do to respect First Nations people at our school. Here are some examples of our ideas:

  • An Indigenous Nature walk.
  • Craftanoon
  • Make bracelets out of finger knitting with red, yellow and black.
  • Have a Fire pit where we can cook damper and do Smoking Ceremonies
  • Have a First Nations elder come and do a painting on the pod
  • Have a native garden and learn how to cook with the different plants
  • Read a book about First Nations Culture in the library.
  • Learn how to live off the land like the First Nations elders
  • Culture Day
  • Paint boomerangs

We had a fun day!!
