Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Day

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent, which is a time when people traditionally fast. Families would have a feast on Shrove Tuesday, a time to eat food so it would not be wasted during Lent. Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday because they were a dish that could use up perishable food such as eggs, fats and milk.

Mini Vinnies will be selling pancakes during recess on Tuesday 25 February

$1:00 for two pancakes, with funds raised going towards Caritas Australia.

Ash Wednesday -the first day of the Christian season of Lent.

Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too.

Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the ashes are applied to a person's forehead, they speak the words: "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel."

The marking of the Ashes on Ash Wednesday is an expression of our faith and a sign that we are asking God for forgiveness. It is a time of prayer, fasting and giving to others. Through prayer we come closer to God so that we are better able to realise our baptismal promise to live justly as Jesus teaches us. Fasting joins us in solidarity with the poor who often have no choice but to go without basic needs such as food, water and shelter. Giving to the poor or ‘almsgiving’ is a sign of our commitment to justice and our thanks for all that God has given us.

Lent prepares us for the season of Easter, the most important time in the Church’s calendar. By praying, fasting and giving alms, we are reminded of Jesus’ death and Resurrection. Jesus brought the promise of hope to all people so that we may “Have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10), so that with our neighbours, we can go further, together.

Our Ash Wednesday Liturgy will be in St Patrick's Church  on Wednesday 26th February from 11:30am.

Project Compassion

The beginning of Lent also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice. We are encouraged to put our compassion into action this Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Each student will receive a Project Compassion box for their donations. Let’s Go Further, Together!
