Camp 1 Kookaburra

On Tuesday the 30th of April, 68 students and 7 staff hopped on board two 51 seater buses for a 2 ½ hour journey to Camp Kookaburra, a camp site just a little out from the tiny town called Corop.

Once at camp, the children settle and eat their lunches whilst the staff are inducted and trained into the various outdoor activities that the children will partake in over the next few days: Karen abseils, Lisa supervises Initiatives, Liz is trained in Low Ropes, Barb takes on Archery, Helen assists on the Flying Fox, Ben runs Indoor Climbing, Mal, the Paramedic helps the children with orienteering. All staff have a go at Canoeing. Evening activities included a night walk, Red Faces and a Movie.

On Thursday we spend the day in Echuca. We board a paddle steamer and are given a historical talk about the area before we take a casual walk through town to spend our money on ice creams, lollies and souvenirs.

Food at camp Kookaburra is plentiful and the duty groups help set up and clean up the dining hall…Chicken and vegies on the first night, spaghetti on the second and roast beef with vegetables on our final night.  What we don’t eat is fed to the Alpacas and goats.

Each evening after we work on our camp booklets and brush our teeth, we settled into our cabins for a good night’s sleep, and sleep we did. The evening was also the time that the mini beasts swarmed…millipedes and giant moths by the thousands crawling, flying and sneaking into our rooms. Friday we say goodbye to Charles, Kate, Kylie, Josh, Nicky and Nathan and hop onto the buses for our journey back to Moonee Ponds West. A great time was had by all and many memories were made at Camp kookaburra.
