September 2022 Happy Term 3

Dear CSC Families, Students and School Community,

I would, once again like to acknowledge and honour the achievements of our cohort, courtesy of the Mathematics Faculty and with the Year 9 Pure Maths class of Semester 2, 2022.

September dream~

soon Melbourne skies filling

one thousand steps

I write this in reference to the Melbourne CBD Excursion conducted on September 9th, 2022 during Week 9, on the 9th Day of the 9th Week of the 9th Month. More excitedly, I am pleased to announce this excursion as a second of a series of excursions, in particular with a Year 9 elective after the previous excursion in Semester 1, 4 months earlier.

The students had worked with ideas of Geometry, Pythagoras and Trigonomic Ratios prior to their commencement of this project which involved again the visiting of various and important landmarks of the CBD.

The group sit and rest on the sandstone blocks outside the Chocolate Buddha café restaurant of Fed Square as they proceed to sketch out geometric designs of buildings

Site 5 Melbourne Central Cone Tower: Observing a 200+ meter tower and estimating the volume of the famous ‘cone.’

Site 6 RMIT Storey Hall: Students took photos of the Penrose (a special type of tiling) designs in front of Storey Hall, noting down the Rhombuses and Kite designs which they will work on their tiling designs of their project in the next few weeks.

Students work and sketch and sketch and work at the RMIT session final stop

Likewise, I would like to commemorate the students on the excursion, they were stellar ambassadors of our school and student monitors helped me carry my cart of measurement equipment and books – Thanks to, Abdi, Burhan, Andrew, Brendan, Habib, Isaac and MJ Lemusu.

With the final stop at Melbourne Central for a 45-minute lunch break, the group did a final pose in front of the Melbourne Central Tower / Old Lead Factory before departing for CSC on the home stretch. I must commend the students for even choosing to sit and dine near David and myself during lunch and reporting in before even the rendezvous time!

Highlights of the excursion included:

At Fed Square an elderly lady on a visit inquired about the excursion and commented to David that ‘the students are well behaved and seem to have a good time whilst also knowing what they are expected to do!’

Meeting student alumini of last year in 2021 being student Bruce Zheng and Daniella Bucchi both whom have made a good name for themselves in university studies and careers!

Student Laurence Joseph even purchasing a box of tissues during a break to 7/11 for the team to use.

Student Burhan offering some of his lunch with peers to ensure all got something to eat.

The team got back to the station safely by the stroke of the school bell and a massive appreciation again to the students and Dave for the day’s success – the student work will be revealed in due course!!!

Once again massive acknowledgement to Mr. Michael Fowles, Ms. Hannah Atkinson, Ms. Karen Gibson, Mrs. Sam Mcternan, Mr. Chris Trevenna, Mr. David Owen and the cooperation of the families of the students who were able to make the CBD excursion possible, fingers crossed and stay tuned with another group of students in 2023!!!

On a side note, once again just who could forget the various buildings and Chinatown itself, which we passed along the way.

Here is to the rest of Semester 2022!

Pure Maths

Students of Year 9 Pure Maths develop and design their house plans and then work out angles of their security settings for their house plans with student names listed using programs such as Geogebra, Archifacilenet and Floorplanet.
