The annual Senior School House Athletics will be held on Friday 5 March at Pedrina Park, commencing at 9.10am. There are lots of opportunities for all the students to participate on the day with a full program and track and field events running simultaneously – only the 1500m events are being held before the day at lunchtimes on the school oval.

Unfortunately, due to COVID regulations, at this stage NO PARENTS OR SPECTATORS ARE ALLOWED TO ATTEND. However, if this changes on Friday with the government announcements on the easing of restrictions we will inform parents early next week.

If restrictions do ease, I will need some parents and friends of the College to volunteer to assist during the day. Once the final announcement is made, please contact me if you are interested in helping for all or part of the day. House teams will be selected in House meetings this week and the programme of events will be sent out via email and appear in in next week’s newsletter.

Swimming

A full report from the Swimming Captains on the successful GD Swimming carnival held last Friday is below. Please read about our great performances. The team to represent the school at ICCES Swimming has been selected and are training hard this week in preparation for this big event next Tuesday in Melbourne.

Football

There is a flyer with this newsletter about football training for those boys interested in playing with the Hamilton Kangaroos in the newly formed Greater South West Junior Football League in either Under 14 or 16.5 divisions.

It has been great to see many College boys already training and trying out with the Hampden team coaches and hopefully more will choose this exciting opportunity. For more information contact me or Jason Bourke at the school.

Student News

Congratulations to Nick Hoskyns and Austin Mayfield who were part of the Hamilton Hurricanes Basketball Under 16 squad team that won the division 2 state title in Traralgon on the weekend. In the under 18’s boys we had Ted Koch and Izack Mayfield playing in the state championships in Bendigo for the Hurricanes also. Great to see these boys enjoying and extending their basketball at a high level.

Zoe Addinsall continued her great form at the Barwon State Pentathlon/Tetrathlon championships at the weekend. Zoe won both the Pentathlon and Tetrathlon for her age group, winning every event – Swimming, Running, Laser Shooting, Riding and Fencing in the Pentathlon.

Special mention also to Year 6 student Charlie Hiscock who came Second in the Tetrathlon Sub Junior boys.

GD Swimming Report

Glenelg Division Swimming was one of the best competitions we could've asked for! The crowd was gasping and the other schools were in absolute awe of our swimming abilities. College took out all three categories winning the Boys, Girls and Overall Aggregates! The team swam amazingly well, placing in the top four positions in every race and relay, bringing home a whopping 36 firsts’. The outstanding efforts of everyone is to be highly congratulated. Chloe Adams, Zoe Rudge and Lachlan Rees won their respective age groups, and an extra special mention to Liam Bilenkij who won all six of his races. Amazing effort Liam! The support shown for all swimmers on the day by parents, teachers and especially our College team made for an energetic environment.

We'd like to thank Mr. Singh, Mr. Alexander, Mrs Silva, Old Collegian Tess Dempsey, parents, friends and the Year 12 cohort and for all the organisation, support and enthusiasm that they brought to the competition. Don't forget, trainings are still running for all keen swimmers and especially members of the ICCES team. Check your emails! These sessions will be running on Monday and Wednesday from 4-5 after school, and this Thursday morning at HILAC from 7-8am.

As we prepare to travel down to our final competition for the year next week, we'd love to see as many students at these trainings as possible.

Netball

The Saturday morning netball competition, although delayed for a week due to the snap lockdown, began successfully on the weekend. This term the College has four teams entered, three of which are in the 15/18 & Under category and one in the 13 & Under. Alexa Balog coached the Under 13’s to victory with Sophie Spence controlling the midcourt, while Matilda and Sophie Whitehead worked seamlessly together in goals.

In the 15/18 & Under competition, College Vixens, coached by Sophie Cunningham, and College Swifts, coached by Amy Innes, went head-to-head in a thrilling game with Vixens just coming out on top. Strong players for the Vixens were Meg Ogle in goals, Alice Whitehead assisting in goals as well as the midcourt, and Sophie Cunningham. Sarah Richardson, Chloe Frost and Hayley Spence were standouts for the Swifts. The other 15/18 & Under team, the College Diamonds, coached by Millie Dopheide, came up against Good Shepard, where they had a very successful win. With Bella Chow a reliable midcourt force, Julia Kelly defending well, and Emma Vallance and Neve McClure shooting to keep the team ahead, it was a fantastic first game for all.

Rowing

Junior State Championships Report

Over the weekend, while our senior rowers continued with their gruelling training on Lake Hamilton, seven of our junior rowers made the three hour trip to Geelong to compete in the Junior State Championships on the Barwon River. Cox Minnie Walker and crew consisting of Emma Donovan, Arabella Dunstan, Miranda Page and Molly Mecham were faced with 21 other competitors in the Year 9 Division 3 coxed quad skull and rowed a very competitive 1000m race to finish their heat in third place. Qualifying for a C final the girls gave it their all, contributing to a very close third place finish.

India Ross and Olivia Handbury competed single skulls and both girls had a very promising start to the day. India achieved a well deserved first place in her heat pushing hard throughout the course and Liv finished strongly in second. These results placed Olivia Handbury in a B final, where she achieved highly commendable second place against tough competition. India qualified for the A final in Year 9 Division 3 and had a tremendous start to her race to position herself well and completed her 1000m race to win a bronze medal.

After many weeks of training our junior rowers are to be congratulated for their success on Saturday and an enormous thank you goes to our coaches Beanie Mould and Simon Ross for their efforts, expertise and guidance offered throughout the day. Thank you also goes to parents for their support on the river banks.

We look forward to hearing more outstanding results as all rowers compete in the Senior State Championships Regatta in Nagambie this weekend.
