YEAR FIVE NEWS

This term, in Religion, the children will focus on the Sacrament of Baptism. They will learn about how God has granted them the gift of uniqueness and they will then explore how different occupations can embrace people’s special gifts and talents. Through this discovery they will learn how God can call each of us to a vocation.

Later in the term the children will focus on Lent as we approach Easter. Through these studies they will follow Jesus’ story and example of how to make good choices in their daily lives and become responsible loving citizens. During this Lenten time, we will also focus on Christian service and how we, as a community, can support others in our world.

In Mathematics, the focus is on the number system as the children explore place value of large numbers into the millions. The children will be exploring a variety of number activities that involve reading, writing, ordering and computing with these numbers. We will continue the emphasis on the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as the children become competent to work with these operations on a daily basis. In particular, this term, the children will be learning how to compute with double digit multiplication. They will also be comparing, ordering and representing a variety of fractions and decimals. Our measurement learning focus this term is centred around perimeter, area, length, volume, capacity and mass.

During our English dedicated time, the children will read for pleasure and for information. They will focus on reading with improved fluency and expression to enhance and contribute to a deeper understanding of what they read. They will be exposed to a variety of text types in particular narrative and persuasive texts. The students will use their skills to construct strong arguments and creative narratives.

Our Spelling program will consist of a word study program which includes studying the sounds of a language and knowing how the sounds are pronounced (orally) and represented (written).

According to research Spelling is best learnt when it is used in context so that it has meaning and purpose. The key principles are:

- Effective spellers use a number of different strategies interactively in order to spell correctly.

- Independence and self-evaluation are essential for spelling development.

- Learning to spell is part of the developmental process of learning to write.

- Errors can be viewed as developmental signposts of children’s awareness of the spelling system.

- Spelling should be taught in context with meaning to the child and purpose as to why it needs to be learnt.

This year we will be integrating Humanities and Social Sciences, History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship as the children build their knowledge of the world.

This term in Science, Mr Capolingua will be focusing on Biological Sciences. The children will be immersed in the adaptations that plants and animals make to survive in their environments. They will learn how to record their observations and ask questions that promote critical and analytical thinking.  

This year we are extremely lucky to have Miss Phoebe as our Innovations and Technologies teacher. She will be working alongside the classroom teachers and all children in Year 5 to work collaboratively in the Innovation Centre which is soon to be named. The children will be creating, exploring, designing, innovating and building using the STEAM principles and the Technologies Curriculum.

This term, the children have unpacked the school’s iPad expectations and understand the role of ICT in our classroom. They are aware of their responsibility to uphold these expectations. Please note that all iPads must come to school fully charged, as we are unable to put them on charge during the school day.

In Health, Mrs Jenkins will lead the children to focus on developing their own interpersonal skills and emotional wellbeing. The children will learn strategies to help them manage their emotions and understand the concept of self-esteem and in particular positive helpful thinking as opposed to negative thinking.  

Mrs Fiona Cole is our Italian teacher this year. Mrs Cole engages the children in speaking and understanding the Italian language. She has introduced the children to stories and greetings and is currently providing the children with opportunities to practise conversation.

Each Club is exclusively school-based, and is run by volunteers. In each issue in the Scholastic Book Club student catologue, your child will find a terrific selection of new and noteworthy fiction, classics, award-winning titles, perennial favourites, reference and sports books and more. Swimming Lessons

This year Swimming lessons will be increased to two days for children in Year 4-6. They will be held this week and next week. They will again be held at Bayswater Waves where the children will be supported by a qualified instructor to develop their strokes and confidence in the pool.

The dates and times for each year level are as follows:

Year 4

- *Thursday 23 February (11am – 1:30pm)

- Friday 24 February (12:00pm – 2:30pm)

Year 5

- Monday 27 February (12:00pm – 2:30pm)

- Tuesday 28 February (12:00pm – 2:30pm)

Year 6

- Wednesday 1 March (12:00pm – 2:30pm)

- *Thursday 2 March (11am – 1:30pm)

*Please note that lessons on Thursdays are slightly earlier.

The children will leave by bus at 11:30am and return to school at 2:45pm (10:30am and return at 1:45pm on Thursdays). Below are a few reminders for parents and children.

• The swimming session commences at 12:00pm and will conclude at 2:30pm. On Thursdays, the lesson will start at 11:00am and conclude at 1:30pm.

• The children will be transported to and from the pool by bus and will be accompanied by myself and their classroom teachers

• The children will be in groups according to their swimming ability and will have a qualified swimming instructor taking them for the session where they will focus on skill development.

• The children are encouraged to have a larger meal at recess and take a snack to the pool to be eaten in the break between swimming.

• The children will need to bring to school in a separate bag their towel, thongs, drink bottle, light snack and may also choose to wear goggles and a swimming cap. Bathers may be worn to school beneath their school uniform but must not be able to be seen. If their bathers are longer than their uniform, then they may get changed before we go.

• Children can come dressed in their sports uniform for the day of their swimming sessions. The children will NOT be getting changed out of their bathers when back at school. If they are attending on a Thursday, then the children can get changed if they need. As the children will be arriving back to school close to 3:00pm they can go home in their bathers. Children must change out of their thongs before leaving the classroom.

If your child has not returned the form indicating their swimming level, then please do so as soon as possible so they can be put into swimming groups.

WELCOME BACK PICNIC

The traditional IJ Family Picnic will be held this Friday the 24th February, 5:30pm-8:00pm on the school oval. We have several food trucks joining us, thanks to Hey Pesto, Vinces Pizza and Mr Whippy for coming along! Not all vans will have eftpos facilities so please bring cash with you. There will be a bouncy castle, obstacle course and face painting to entertain the kids. Children are welcome to use the play equipment at parents discretion and with parent supervision. We hope to see you all there.

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Thank you to the parents who have volunteered on the fundraising committee, we love your energy and ideas!

The committee met last week to discuss the year ahead and the goals we wish to achieve. We decided to set a fundraising goal of $10,000 for this year, which will be donated to the school for the new Innovations Lab. The P&F are thrilled to support the school board and staff in their vision for this new lab and we're excited at the opportunities it will create for our children.

The parent community has been asking for a quiz night and we've heard you! The P&F quiz night will be held on Friday the 15th September so please put the date in your calendars. We will advise on further details in the near future.

We are looking forward to the year ahead and achieving our goal with support of the entire parent body. We can expect great things when we work together!

MAD CAMP is 3 Months away, our next committee meeting will be held Wednesday 1 March, 7pm at Fast Eddies Morley. All welcome.

The Chair of St Peter the Apostle

FEAST DAY 22 FEBRUARY

When the Pope cautions world leaders, pleads for peace, or condemns social injustice, people listen and respond. What makes the world listen to this man? The answer lies in Scripture and in Tradition. Peter is named first among the apostles of Jesus; he was often their spokesman and leader; he was the first to preach after Pentecost; and he was the leader in defending Christ and his message. Peter was at the Transfiguration and in the garden.

He proclaimed to Jesus, “You are the Christ,” and Christ singled him out:

“So I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:18–19)

Jesus prayed for Peter that he might strengthen his brothers. (Luke 22:32) And Jesus gave Peter a threefold commission to “feed my sheep.” (John 21:15–17)

From the beginning, the specialness, or primacy, of Peter has been recognized. On the feast of the Chair of Peter, we celebrate our unity as a Church. We celebrate the love, presence, and protection of Christ for us, the Church. The title Chair of Peter refers to the chair from which a bishop presided, a symbol of his authority. When the title refers to Saint Peter, it recalls the supreme teaching power of Peter and his successors. It is from the chair, from the pastoral power given him, that the pope shepherds Christ’s flock.

Project Compassion

The theme for Project Compassion 2017 is “Love your neighbour”.

This year, Project Compassion demonstrates how love for our neighbours can transform lives. For more than 50 years, Caritas Australia has been privileged to work together with our neighbours – our most vulnerable sisters and brothers in First Australian communities and in many other countries. Working with our partner agencies in those communities, we have developed the strength to combat poverty, promote justice and uphold the dignity of every person.

Throughout Project Compassion 2017, inspiring stories from the Philippines, Timor-Leste, Australia, Vietnam and Fiji will be shared, highlighting the importance of working hand in hand with communities around the world.

Family Mass

A focus for 2017 for Infant Jesus School is to strengthen the links between the Parish and the School. As a school community we have been invited to organise and lead parts of the Mass at Infant Jesus Church at 6.30pm on Saturday 11 March. This is also one of the Enrolment Masses in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The School Choir will be leading the singing for this celebration. If you, and your family, would like to help in any way please contact Ms Clare Moffat or Mr Frank Colangelo

Parish News

The Carmelite Community of Infant Jesus is delighted to announce that their Superior Father Greg Homeming OCD has been appointed Bishop of Lismore in New South Wales by Pope Francis. Father Greg will be consecrated in the Lismore Cathedral this week on 22 February. Infant Jesus School contributed to the funds collected by the Parish for a gift which was presented to Fr Greg to mark this significant occasion. Please pray with us and the Parish for Father Greg as he enters this important position in our Church.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION ENROLMENT MASSES

All families who wish to enrol their child for the Sacrament of Confirmation at Infant Jesus Church this year are required to attend ONE of the following enrolment Masses:

· Saturday 11 March at 6.30pm OR

· Sunday 12 March at 9.30am OR

· Sunday 12 March at 6.00pm.

Please remember to register your child's name and your contact details at the church foyer before or after the Mass.
