THIS WEEK IN SUSTAINABILITY

Our Lower Juniors handled different sized seeds from an avocado seed to a bean seed. They learned that a banana has small seeds. The students watched the story, "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle to follow the lifecycle of a plant and learn what conditions a seed needs to grow. Students put on gloves and a mask to shovel potting mix into a zip loc bag, then dropped  three bean seeds inside. A little water was sprayed over the soil. They coloured in their greenhouse templates then attached them to their bags. Their greenhouses will be placed in a sunny window. In the coming weeks, students will observe how the seeds grow and develop into plants.

PATHWAYS SUSTAINABILITY

Students watched the video, Ted Ed, Why Cities Need Trees. They compared two different cities, one that planted trees and one that cleared trees to build high-rise buildings. Students observe and discussed the differences. The city with fewer trees had high pollution levels, climate change and health problems. The city with more trees had healthy people, more habitats for wildlife, green spaces for people to enjoy, reduced pollution, better air and water quality.

Pathways students are busy creating posters to promote Naranga Tree Planting Days 28th and 29th July. They have important messages about trees and their posters will feature in a display at the office.
