The greatest wealth is health...

Leah Biondo - Domain Leader

We could reflect upon thousands of sayings related to health. Perhaps, however, the one that best defines how central well-being is to human happiness and prosperity was coined over 2,000 years ago by the Roman poet Virgil, when he said, “The greatest wealth is health.”

7-9 Health and Physical Education

7-9 HPE has focused on building and maintaining emotional literacy and personal strengths, positive coping and problem-solving skills and managing overall health and wellbeing. Students have been learning about the importance of developing their self-awareness, social awareness, self-regulation, and decision-making skills. Our aim is to ensure that students have a strong sense of self-identity and the ability to navigate complex emotions and relationships in a healthy and productive way.

HPE students have been working hard to develop their kicking and striking skills in a variety of sports and activities, including, AFL, soccer, volleyball, badminton and more. Students have been learning about the various components of fitness, including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and have been participating in a range of activities designed to improve these components, including running, resistance training, and boxing. Students should be proud of the effort and commitment they have put into incorporating these into their overall fitness routine.

Outdoor Education – Year 9 & Unit 1-4

Our outdoor education classes have been exploring the natural world and learning about conservation and sustainability. Students have been engaging in a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, and fishing, while learning about the local ecosystem and how to protect it. They have also been learning valuable outdoor survival skills.

Year 9 Outdoor Education beach day

Students recently completed a practical day in preparation for their upcoming camp in May. They learnt about beach safety, how to keep themselves and each other safe as well as general knowledge and information regarding the coastal and beach environment. Students also learnt about CPR and safe practices not only around the water but in the community as well. Overall, students who participated in this experience had a positive experience which allowed them to learn new skills in a fun and interactive environment.

Unit 1 – Trip to Sorrento

Students travelled down to Sorrento Pier for a day excursion where they had the opportunity to go dolphin and seal watching on a boat. The weather was beautiful, the seals and dolphins came out to play, swimming under and around the boat. Students were given hot chocolates and had a discussion around the sustainability of our bay and how we can best protect these beautiful endangered animals.

Unit 3 – Grampians

Unit 3 Outdoor Education Students attended their final camp to the Grampians, staying at Borough Huts. Students enjoyed an array of activities including rock abseiling at Hollow Mountain, hiking to the Pinnacles look out, cooking together on a Trangia and collaborating with their peers to light a campfire on their final night.

VCE Health and Human Development

In Unit 3/4 HHD this term, students had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia to assemble 400 birth kits. The Birthing Kit Foundation is a humanitarian organisation that provides birthing kits and education in clean birthing practices to women birthing at home in remote regions of the developing world. The 400 assembled birth kits were distributed to pregnant mothers in DR Congo, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and Nigeria. The experience was a great privilege and opportunity for Sandringham College HHD students.

On behalf of the HPE domain, would like to thank all students, parents, and guardians for their hard work, dedication, and support. We are proud of the progress our students have made in their academic, physical, and emotional development and we look forward to continuing to work together to ensure their success. We wish you all a happy and healthy break and we look forward to seeing you in the next term.

Kind regards,

The Health and Physical Education Domain
