Learning Habits

Practice, Routine and Postive Reinforcement

Updated our Learning Habits Rubric 2023

We wanted to share some of the key learning habits that we encourage our students to develop in order to succeed at Sandringham College. However, we also understand that developing these habits is not just the responsibility of our school, but also of our students' families. We would like to offer some strategies that you can use at home to help develop these habits in your child.

Organisation is a critical habit for successful learning, and it begins with having a structured routine. Help your child establish a consistent daily routine that includes set times for waking up, going to bed, charging their device, and completing homework. You can also encourage your child to keep a planner or calendar to keep track of important assignments and deadlines. Compass has a my tasks option that can be used. Students can click on the + Add button to create a list of tasks with set dates and can check them off when completed.

Positive behavior is another essential habit for academic success. Encourage your child to treat others with respect, actively listen to others, and follow instructions. Help them to develop good communication skills, such as using a polite tone and body language, and encourage them to be responsible and take care of their belongings.

Participation and contribution are habits that can be developed through regular practice. Encourage your child to actively engage in learning activities and contribute to class discussions by asking questions, presenting ideas, and seeking clarification. Encourage them to work with others and collaborate on projects to build their teamwork and communication skills.

Homework completion is a critical habit for reinforcing classroom learning and building study skills. Set aside a designated time and space for your child to complete homework, and make sure that they have all the necessary materials available. Provide support and guidance as needed, but also encourage them to take ownership of their learning and complete tasks independently.

Growth Mindset is a habit that can be developed through positive reinforcement and encouragement. Praise your child's efforts and progress rather than just their achievements, and encourage them to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Help them to develop resilience by teaching them to learn from failure and use feedback to improve their work.

We hope that these strategies will be helpful in developing the learning habits that are essential for success both in and out of the classroom. Thank you for your continued support in helping your child achieve their full potential.
