Are you aware that, as an OGEA member, you are part of a democratic organization that helps determine the rules you are employed under in your collectively bargained agreement?  You get to give input into the bargaining process, vote for OGEA leadership to direct bargaining, and vote on whether or not to accept the bargaining agreements.

You can find your OGEA contract and safety MOU at ogea.org

Article 14:  Hours of Employment

Are you aware that article 14.1 of your contract defines the hours that you are required to work?

  • Article 14.1: “All unit members shall be at their workstations seven and one-quarter (7-1/4) hours per day exclusive of the lunch period.”
    • “Psychologists shall work an eight (8) hour day exclusive of thirty (30) minute duty-free lunch.  School Nurses shall work an eight (8) hour day exclusive of thirty (30) minute duty-free lunch.”
  • If you are being asked to shorten your lunch period (it can not be reduced to less than 30 minutes), has the rest of your day also been reduced?  If not, this may be a violation of your contract.
    • Contact your OGEA representative to discuss this.

Are you aware that instructional minutes are outlined in articles 14.5 and 14.6?

  • TK and K:  Between 260 and 290 minutes on a normal day and 260 minutes on an adjusted day.  (article 14.5.1)
  • Grades 1 to 3:  Between 300 and 305 minutes on a normal day and 260 to 265 on an adjusted day. (14.5.2)
  • Grades 4 to 6:  Between 320 and 325 minutes on a normal day and 260 to 265 on an adjusted day. (article 14.6.1)
  • Grades 7 and 8: At least 250 minutes per day and a preparation period. (article 14.6.2)
    • If you volunteer to teach during your preparation period, you are entitled to the hourly rate of pay outlined in article 12.5.4.1. ($46 per hour)
  • Instructional minutes can be adjusted by banked minutes in order to accommodate adjusted days.  This is also outlined in article 14.

Remember that any OGEA member can file a grievance if there is a violation of our contract.  Make sure you follow article 7, which deals with grievances.  You can contact your site representative or our OGEA leadership for help with this.
