Year 3/4 Bulletin

The Big Idea

‘I play an active role in the democratic process that shapes my community’

The Driving Questions

  • What is a democracy?
  • How has my identity been shaped over time?
  • How can I contribute to my community?

Learning Intention: To take a collective action in order to support our local community

Task: Community Support

Over the course of the first term, students unpacked the following terms:

  • democracy
  • rule
  • law
  • community
  • identity
  • action

As a collective action and conclusion to our first Big Idea of the year, we prompted students with the query “how can we help our local community?” After discussions, we decided to donate items (in lieu of monetary donations) towards a charity chosen by the students in a democratic process. In the MPC, after being informed about four different choices, students unanimously voted upon a not for profit charity organisation named “St Kilda Mums” which promotes the health, wellbeing, and safety of mums in our local community who may need support.

Students were placed in small groups in each class, and designated a classroom to promote our fundraiser. They collaborated and delegated tasks, working independently to create:

  • posters advertising the organisation
  • speeches to provide information about the organisation to their class
  • brochures
  • visual representations of the items required
  • websites to keep track of the donations
  • advertisements and videos

Examples of Students Work

What’s next for us?

We will collect all donations from the classes and from our students and give them to St Kilda Mums to distribute to those in need. We have begun collecting and if you wish to donate, please do not hesitate to bring donations to your classroom teacher. Please ask your child what can and cannot be donated. If they have forgotten, please visit the St Kilda Mums website www.stkildamums.org for more information.

What can you do now?

Continue the conversation at home by asking your child about how you can contribute to this cause, supporting your child in understanding that we are helping our community members, even if we do not interact with them on a daily basis. Remind your child that a donation of time can be as valuable as a donation of money for those less fortunate than ourselves.
