Year 1 Bulletin

This week’s Bulletin focus is fostering mathematical fluency.
‘ Fluency evokes a sense of confidence and capability, being equipped and ready, as well as a self-belief that the mathematical strategies (repertoire), knowledge and connected understandings (number sense as well as number facts) a learner has developed will enable them to effectively tackle new challenges and that they will prevail.’
Learning Intention: To use the count on from strategy to add 2 numbers together.
Learning Task:
Students worked in pairs to play a fluency game to practise using the count up from strategy.
Materials:
2 white boards, white board markers, a pair of dice.
Students were placed in pairs. They drew up a 3x3 grid on their white board and numbered the board choosing 9 numbers from 2 -12. The goal was to roll the 2 dice and add them together using the count up from strategy. If the total was one of the numbers on their grid they placed a counter on the number. Students took turns rolling the dice, covering the number when appropriate. The object of the game is to keep playing until one student gets 3 counters in a row, like a noughts and crosses game. We played this game at the start of each maths session for a week to allow students to become more proficient.

Strengthening the Home/School
Partnership - What you can do:
You could play this game at home and treat your child as an expert. Remind them that when adding 2 numbers together they should count on from the highest number.
Grandparents/special friends visit is Friday 5th May
As a means of concluding our big idea and answering our driving questions we are excited to welcome guests to our classrooms to ask them about what life was like for them when they were a child. The event starts at 11:15am in our classrooms and will last for approximately an hour.
Kind regards,
Angela and Gillian
