Prep Bulletin

Learning Intention: To match a number with its amount.

Learning Experience Overview:In this learning experience, students were developing their counting strategies through exploring measurement with different informal units.

Launch

We began the lesson with a game of ‘Beat the Teacher’. The game requires students to match the numeral with the amount. It involves strategy as the first to have 3 numbers crossed off in a row wins.

Explore

After the launch, the class discussed the Measuring Anchor Chart and the different ways to accurately measure an object.

The teacher then modelled how to measure the length of their own shoe by using different informal units of measurement (scissors, lego, pencils, gluesticks). The students then practised counting strategies through exploring measuring objects with different informal units of measurement Eg. 4 textas, 6 lego blocks.

Enabling

To enable students, manipulatives were provided to help with their counting. Students could also use measurement strategies from a smaller version of the ‘Measurement Reminders’ Anchor Chart.

Extending

To extend, students could have a go at measuring their shoes with a ruler or colouring the exact amount eg. 2 and a half.

Summarising

During the lesson, the class discussed what they noticed about their results:

  • Which items were easier to use when measuring and why?
  • What did you notice about the different materials when measuring?
  • Why were there different amounts needed for different units of measurement?

In this learning experience, students are working towards:

  • Using different counting strategies
  • Accurately measuring an object
  • Using informal units of measurement
  • Comparing different ways of measuring the same object

Examples of students’ work:

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:

  • Discuss different counting strategies
  • Discuss how to measure accurately (lining up with the bottom of the object, no gaps between the units of measurement, lining the units up straight)
  • Using different informal units of measurement and measuring objects around your house
  • Comparing the length of objects
