Lower Junior students are learning to be responsible with their rubbish and put it into the correct bins so food scraps can be composted and soft plastics can be recycled. Visuals and labels are planned to help students make good choices.
Students learnt about the plastic problem in a village called Njau in Gambia, Africa. Animals were eating plastic bags dumped on the road side and dying. The story One Plastic Bag by Miranda Paul, shows how one woman’s determination to clean up her local environment led to a recycling project where plastic was collected, washed, cut up and crocheted by the local women to make purses to be sold at the local market. Money from the sales helped to buy a goat for a family. Over time the plastic problem was resolved and the families had a healthier and cleaner environment.
Let’s be inspired to try recycling at Naranga and at home.
Last week in Sustainability, we shared the new Charlie and Lola story, We are Extremely Very Good Recyclers by Lauren Child. Each class received their tree counter poster. When individual students or classes make a conscious effort to recycle, their effort will be recorded on their class tree. Their teacher will colour in one leaf at a time. When all the leaves are coloured in, the class wins a real tree or plant that can be planted around our school grounds. Plants that are chosen will be suitable for our local environment.
Good luck with this challenge!

Congratulations to Chandler F for always knocking on the Music door and giving Jay soft plastics ready for recycling and encouraging his friends to do the same.
Good job Chandler!
