The Grade Four team would like to extend a warm welcome back to Term 2. We hope that you have all had an excellent holiday break.
It’s going to be a big term with lots of fun and exciting things upcoming. This update will give you a brief overview of what your child will be learning over their second term of Grade Four, along with some reminders from the teaching team.
Aligning with Term one there will be a strong focus in the first few weeks of ‘Creating the Environment’. These sessions focus on the importance of our co-created classroom protocols and building strong relationships with each other through a range of activities. We will also be co-teaching our consent lessons, this aligns with the government's mandatory consent education policy.
In reading, the Grade Fours are focusing on further developing their reading comprehension skills, with particular focus on questioning and summarising. They will be deconstructing various texts to assist them to develop personal interest in particular genre to build their author and text type knowledge and interest.
Throughout Term 2, the Grade Four students will be concentrating on the traits of Ideas, Conventions and Word Choice, through informative and poetic writing activities.
In Mathematics, students in Grade Four work on building their knowledge in areas of place value, multiplication and division. To understand these concepts, students will use a range of games, strategies and problem-solving skills, whilst using hands-on manipulatives to consolidate their learning. As mentioned last term, topics in mathematics will be introduced throughout the year, these learning areas will be revisited multiple times to give students multiple opportunities to practice their skills in order to build a strong sense of number.
In this term’s unit of Science, students will explore chemical and physical properties. During this unit they will be working through the science process to explore, hypothesise and test materials to understand their properties and apply their knowledge to propose solutions to a challenge question.
To complement and reinforce classroom learning at home, students in the Grade Four department will complete maths and reading homework each week, beginning in week 2.
