It is with great pride that I inform the school community that Naomi Derrick was a finalist in the Homestay Family of the Year Award. Naomi, her son Toby, Doanvy Roberts (International Student Program Director), three students and I attended the awards ceremony on Friday 17th June 2022 . Naomi was awarded a commendation by the selection committee and we couldn't have been more proud. Naomi is an excellent representative for our school and the homestay community. Naomi and her son Toby have been a homestay family with Sandy College since August 2019. Her warm cheerful personality has always made students feel comfortable and at home. Throughout the lockdown periods, she encouraged and supported our students to focus on their studies. Students staying with Naomi felt that she was there for them when they most needed it. One of Naomi's students from 2021 is still living with her as he transitions to full time university study.
Homestay is an important part of our International Program. The program is managed by College staff and our focus is on placing short term, or long term stay, students in a caring and supportive home. Our homestays come in all shapes and sizes - families, empty nesters, single people and retirees. Homestay involves hosting a student for 6 months, 12 months or 2 years (VCE students). Students come from all over the world - Italy, France, Belgium, Cambodia, China, Vietnam, Thailand. Many homestay families develop long and lasting connections with their students. Homestay parents also receive financial payment for hosting a student to cover food, bills etc.
If you or someone you know is interested in taking part in hosting an international student from our school we would love to hear from you. Please contact the College 8599 0500 and ask to speak to Doanvy Roberts.

I would like to acknowledge both Barbara Tulloch and Marianna Hoult who have left our school after many years of dedicated service.
Barbara Tulloch
Barbara had planned to retire this year but returned to support our students in mathematics as part of the Tutor Initiative. Barb was well loved by the students as an outstanding teacher of mathematics and French. Barb also mentored many graduate teachers over her time at the College and was extremely generous with her time and support.
Marianna Hoult
Marianna and her husband are retiring to the west of state and this has made it impossible for her to continue to work at the College. Marianna has worked at Sandringham College for 15 years. She has been a valued member of the mathematics department and a committed classroom teacher.
